Class of the Week: 1/2D

Numeracy

As part of our unit on 2D shapes and 3D objects the students used frozen peas and toothpicks to create a 3D object. The students learnt that the peas were the vertices or corners and the toothpicks created the edges needed to make the faces of their 3D objects. Have a look at their wonderful creations.

Inquiry

This term, the students have been focusing on ‘Change’. How they have changed since they were born and how different animals change in their life cycle.

In the last 3 weeks, the students have eagerly participated in 5 experiments that focused on chemical and physical changes. Here are a few thoughts from the students about what they did in each experiment and what they learnt.

Making Ooblek

First you have to get two cups. Next you have to pour flour in one cup, then you pour water in the other cup. After that you put a little bit of the water into the cup of flour and mix it to make Ooblek. You can squish and chop Ooblek but it always goes back into one piece afterwards. Ooblek is an example of an irreversible change - you can’t turn it back into flour and water.

Making Playdough

When we made playdoh we learnt that there is a three colour wheel and you only need red, blue and yellow and you can make 12 different colours with these. We also learnt that you can make playdough with hot water or an oven. When you use hot water it only takes 5 minutes to make the playdough.

We used flour, hot water, food colouring, cream of tartar and salt. You put all the dry ingredients in a bowl, then add the hot water. Making playdough is an example of an irreversible change.

Mixing Oil and Water

First you put food colouring and water in a jar. Next you put oil in the jar and shake the jar. The oil and the water will not mix. They go back to staying in layers in the jar. Next add some dishwashing liquid in the jar and shake. The detergent helps the oil and water to mix instead of staying in layers. This is an irreversible change.

Making Cookies

When we did this we watched Mrs Glancy mix melted butter with the dry ingredients. She had a recipe to follow. While the cookies were cooking we wrote in our experiment book. We showed

what happened before and after we cooked the mixture. Making cookies is an irreversible change. We got to take a cookie home at the end of the day.

Popcorn

We made popcorn with Mrs Perkins. We put corn seeds in the machine and when the little seeds got warm enough they popped open. We all got some popcorn to take home and eat.

Reading and Writing Procedures

We made sock puppets because we wanted to write a procedure. We used old (clean!) socks, stickers, pencils, textas and some of us used googly eyes. We made bunnies, cats, dogs, unicorns and even a shark and a panda. To write the procedure we had to remember each step in the order we did it when we were making our puppets. Some parts of making the puppet were easy, some parts were hard but mostly they were fun to make.

Digital Technologies

We made our own folders in our Google Drive and then we each made a Google Doc about things we love. A lot of people learned new things like how to change the font and its colour, how to insert a picture and how to copy and paste text. We think that we get more done when we use Google Docs because its more fun than writing on paper.
