Chess Tournament

Congratulations to our first WPS Chess Team who went along last week to compete in the Chess Tournament held at The Alice Miller School.  Thank you also to Terri and Anna for taking the students along.

Japanese Visitors

Last Thursday on the 8/8/19, the Year 5 & 6's were lucky enough to have two Japanese visitors, who taught us about their culture, calligraphy and how to make a paper crane that flaps its wings. Some people were selected to write their name in Japanese calligraphy by one of the visitors that came. The Japanese teacher  who came, brought some letters from the kids from her school in Japan and we are happy to have pen pals so we are writing back. We all enjoyed it, and are very thankful for their visit.

Basketball Tournament

The mixed team had a great day and put their everything into each game. Overall the mixed team won 7 drew 1 and lost 2. Just missing out on the finals by coming 3rd. Great Effort mixed team.

The girls team played wonderfully! They had great team work and they tried very hard to play their best. Even though in the end they didn’t get to play in the finals, they won 8, drew 1 and lost 1 coming 3rd. They played very well and they should be proud of how far they have come already. Amazing job Girls team!!

Buddies

On Friday we celebrated 100 days of school with the preps! We celebrated it by making hats with lots of glitter and colour for them to wear. All of the hats looked amazing and everyone put so much effort into them. A big thanks to the senior unit and junior unit teachers for helping out and organising the whole activity. Congrats preps on 100 days of school!!! You’re doing amazing keeping up your attendance throughout this year.

Science Challenge - Name a star and planet

This year the International Astronomical Union has given Australia permission to name a star and the planet that orbits it. The planet we get to name is a gas giant a little under half the size of Jupiter. Its current, rather boring name is HD 38283 b.

Our star was chosen because it is easily visible from the southern hemisphere, and because the planet that orbits it was discovered by Australian astronomer Chris Tinney using the Anglo-Australian Telescope at Siding Spring, NSW.

Our science challenge this term is to come up with a new name for our Australian star and planet!

Your name needs to:

  • Reflect the wide number of different people that call Australia home
  • Be imaginative and fun
  • Not be the name of anyone who has lived in the last 100 years
  • Be part of the theme; for example the planets in our solar system are named after Roman gods. A theme is important because if more planets are discovered orbiting the star they can be given similar names.

Some theme ideas could be: food, sport, geographical features, music, art or anything else you can come up with!

Write your names down (illustrate them if you like!) and give them to your teacher by Wednesday 21st of August. The winners for F-2, 3-4, and 5-6 will be announced at assembly on Friday 23rd August.

If you really love your names and would like to enter them for serious consideration, you can submit your names at https://name-exoplanet.net.au/
