The 'Start Right' approach is a critical focus in all classrooms which aims to establish positive supports and practices from the start of the year. We set up for the year ahead by taking the time to establish routines, promote positive behaviours, and nurture social connections within each class.
Across the school there is an early focus on emotional literacy and regulation. Students have been developing individual Focus Plans to empower them with self-regulation strategies. These strategies are linked to our whole school approach to the Zones of Regulation and reinforced through the Resilience Project.
Another critical focus for teachers is making meaningful connections with each student to establish positive and trusting relationships. Additional time is spent learning about each student's interests, strengths, dispositions and goals.
Getting to know a child is critical to supporting their learning and wellbeing. Staff work collaboratively to build the picture of each child in order to provide them with a high level of care. We share noticings, monitor changes, develop strategies, and support restorative practices.
Parents and carers are also key in providing important updates and supporting teachers to understand their child's strengths and needs. All families are encouraged to make contact with their child's teacher or school leaders through our communication channels should you wish to discuss your child's wellbeing, friendships, family changes, or emerging concerns.
A wise person once said: Start the way you want to finish. For Newtown Primary School that means starting right with a focus on looking after yourself and each other.
