'Creating Futures Together'

Teacher Profile - Mr. David Gill - Leading Teacher of Community Connections, Student Voice, Student Agency and Student Leadership

Q: What made you want to become a teacher?

A: I have always had a passion for the performing arts, and I wanted to share that passion with the next generation. I also believe that education has the power to change lives and I wanted to be a part of that.

Q: What's your favourite thing about being a teacher?

A: I love seeing the lightbulb moment on a student's face when they finally understand something. It's incredibly rewarding to be a part of their learning journey.

Q: What exactly is your role as the leading teacher of Community Connections, Student Voice, Student Agency and Student Leadership?

A: My role is all about helping students become active, engaged members of the school community. I work on initiatives that encourage students to connect with each other, their teachers, and the wider community. I also help students develop their leadership skills and give them a voice in the school. It's all about creating a positive, inclusive school culture where every student feels valued and supported.

Q: Can you tell us about some of the initiatives you're working on?

A: Sure! I'm really excited about exploring how we give and receive feedback in the college. It's all about making sure our students have a say in their learning and feel heard and develop great relationships with their teachers. We're also revamping our student leadership program to give our leaders even more ownership and accountability. They'll have their own goals and targets, and work in teams to make a real impact in our school community. It's going to be a really exciting time!

Q: What do you think are the most important things students should get out of their time at Wheelers Hill Secondary College?

A: I believe it's important for students to feel a sense of belonging and pride in the school, and to develop strong connections with their peers and teachers. I also think it's important for students to have a say in their learning and to feel empowered to take ownership of their education. And of course, it's important for students to have fun and enjoy their time at school! I encourage all students to find a program outside of the classroom to get involved with, whether that be a sports team, our school production, our music ensembles, art club, etc.

Q: How do you feel the year has started?

A: I feel refreshed and ready to go after a fantastic break in New Zealand. I even bumped into a couple of our students while I was there! This year, we're putting an even bigger focus on both learning and wellbeing. All staff have been eager to check in on students and build relationships. With the addition of Learning and Wellbeing Leaders in the subschools, we're amplifying our efforts to create a supportive and positive environment for our students. I feel like this year is going to be pretty great! I'm also extremely excited for our production of The SpongeBob Musical.

Q: When you're not busy teaching or planning, what do you like to do?

A: When I have some free time, I have a few passions and hobbies that keep me busy. One of my biggest passions is being a marriage celebrant. I love helping couples celebrate their love and bring their unique vision for their wedding day to life. Along with that, I play social netball twice a week - one of my teams is even made up of staff from the college. I'm also a huge Gold Coast Suns supporter and enjoy attending live music shows. In my down time, I enjoy playing video games. It's great to have some fun and different interests to balance out the busy life of a teacher and celebrant.
