Successful REDS Grants Recipients: Great Southern

It was a pleasure to join Rebecca Stephens Member for Albany, Jane Kelsbie - Member for Warren-Blackwood and Shelley Payne MLC in Albany recently to announce the successful recipients of the 2022 Regional Economic Development (RED) Grants for the Great Southern region.

Congratulations to these five diverse projects across the region sharing in $564,500 funding:

  • Broomehill Village Co-operative Ltd received $151,000 in grant funding for the refurbishment of the historic two-storey hotel in Broomehill to increase worker and tourist accommodation;
  • A $150,000 grant supports CDG Imports Pty Ltd to acquire new manufacturing technology to vertically integrate a production process that is currently being outsourced to suppliers outside the region;
  • MCC Contractors is supported by $149,000 funding to grow the region's civil construction industry capacity;
  • A $64,250 grant contributes to the upgrade of the amphitheatre at Albany's Historic Whaling Station tourism precinct by The Jaycees Community Foundation Inc; and
  • The McGovern Foundation will receive $50,250 towards their Wanderer Program, which aims to expand the economic opportunities for Aboriginal people through their unique driver mentor programme.

Manufacturing, tourism, and Aboriginal economic development are key priorities for development in the Great Southern and supporting these projects will help further progress these sectors.

Across Western Australia, our RED Grants have made a positive impact on local business and industry, investing $45.8 million over eight years to drive economic development in regional communities.

Small Animal Welfare Grants

Companion animals and wildlife play a significant role in the lives of Western Australians, so I was pleased to announce $549,901 funding for 24 community-based projects which will lead to better care for domestic pets and rescued wildlife across the State.

It was great to see our friends in the Great Southern, from Healing Hand's Wildlife Care and Amaris Wildlife Rehabilitation Sanctuary among the successful recipients, who will use their grants towards equipment to improve the rehabilitation of ringtail possums and western grey kangaroos.

The McGowan Government's Animal Welfare Grant Program supports a range of not-for profit projects, including fostering or rehoming of companion animals, rehabilitating wildlife and providing low-cost animal health or veterinary care for disadvantaged people.

There was significant interest in this funding round, highlighting the passion, commitment and demand from community-groups wanting to provide the best possible care for animals in need.

We commend the WA community and these dedicated community groups who do so much to support the health and welfare of companion animals and displaced or injured wildlife.
