Year 7 Camp

It is without doubt that an absolute highlight of our Year 7 Program is the much-anticipated Year 7 Camp. For our students, it is a chance to develop long lasting and important friendships with not only fellow students but staff alike.

As a school, it brings us much pride when students recall their experiences on camp – the legacy that lives on long after we return is what makes memories.

This year, we were so happy to return to the CYC Cowes site. Our relationship with CYC is long – and so valued. Our students again were welcomed by the fantastic staff and in awe of the surroundings – just how many activities could we do???!! Giant swing, flying fox, mechanical climbing wall, the “pinnacle” just to name a few. But the highlight was, and always is, the group activities that allow students to connect to their (sometimes competitive!) mentor teachers and classmates. The annual tug of war competition did not disappoint, even with a shaky start. Our 30 Year old rope snapped on the first round – we can’t wait to proudly display this legacy item in our Year 7 Centre.

As we reflect on our experiences and return to the everyday life of school, I hope all Year 7 students embrace the moment..... Year 7 Camp is one of a kind, and we truly hope that all students remember fondly in years to come the fun, the laughs..... and of course the disco!

“During the Year 7 camp I formed better friendships with the girls in my class, we all became closer and found out each others interests, we also made some inside jokes that I think will stick forever. I also made friends with other people, who I haven’t spoken to before. I talked to people who were in the same activity group as me, and we became friends in such small periods of time. My personal favourite activity during camp was the giant swing, I went all the way up to maximum height and it was really fun. Everyone had to work together to pull the rope which lifted them up into the sky, it made us work on our teamwork skills and our strength of course. We even got to watch some of the teachers go soaring through the sky. Another one of the activities I enjoyed was the pinnacle, me and my friends raced each other to see who could get to the top first, I even got to go twice! The last thing that really stood out was the disco, I think the year 10’s did a super great job putting it together, and for once I knew majority of the songs. Me and my friend group even became friends with the year 10’s and we played Uno and other things with them. All over I think this had to have been my favourite camp I’ve ever been on, and I really hope I get to experience more fun stuff like this sometime in the future.” Priya, 7E

“On the second night we had a disco run by the Year 10s that had volunteered to come on our camp it was one of the best things that happened on camp. At the end of each day there would be an award for the student that had stood out in that activity. I had so much fun. ” Holly, 7A

Year 9 Learning for Life Term 1

Students have had a great start to the year in Term 1 in the Learning for Life Program. Students read the novel Runner, enjoyed a tour of the CBD where they were shown real places of where the book was set and wrote a text response essay. Students then participated in a number of Science experiments, learnt about Science around the world, participated in a Science experience either in the city or at school and presented their research in a personal inquiry project. We are looking forward to seeing them all next term where we will explore how Indigenous Australians thrived on our land for 65,000 years and the effects colonisation had as well as the affects on Australia of World War 1.
