ALUMNI UPDATES

MARRIAGES
Congratulations to Celine Lim (Class of '14) and Dexter Hu (Class of '11) who recently celebrated their 1-year wedding anniversary. The newlyweds had their wedding on 1st December 2021, at the beautiful Zonzo Estate.
Celine and Dexter had a 'Micro wedding' of 25 guests, due to COVID-19 restrictions. Their wedding party included some familiar names to our WCC community: Chris Yong (Class of ‘11), Jazer Lee (Class of ‘11), Justin Choong (Class of ‘11) and Phoebe Naylor (Class of ‘14).
Congratulations to Garret Munyard (Class of '17) who recently got married to Katie! The newlyweds got married on 9th December 2022 at the Carlei Estate Winery in Upper Beaconsfield, with many guests flying in from overseas.
Their bridal party included some familiar names to our WCC community: Harley Wiffen (NWS, 17'), Ryan Howell (NWS, 17'), Arielle Munyard (NWS, 19') and Skylar Munyard (NWS, 21'). Katie's Dog, Gracie (pictured above) was their flower girl, and the bridal car was a Munyard family heirloom (1967 HR Holden) that belonged to his great-grandmother.
ALUMNI APPRECIATION INTERVIEW
We asked alumni graduate, Mason Aulia (Class of '20, Wantirna South), about his journey and experiences since graduating from WCC!
What years did you attend Waverley Christian College?
I attended Waverley Christian College from 2008 to 2020.
What or who motivated you at the College? What is your fondest memory of your years as a Student?
Towards the end of my time at WCC, I was incredibly motivated and encouraged by a few teachers who mentored and guided me. Teachers like Mr Howard and Ms Pho provided me with a lot of encouragement, both academically and spiritually. My fondest memory at WCC would have to be the India Cultural Trip I had the opportunity to go on in 2019. The opportunity to travel overseas and experience the culture of another country with friends and teachers was amazing.
What were the biggest challenges you’ve faced since leaving School?
The biggest challenge has been the responsibility of being more independent in my spiritual development and growth. As a student at WCC, constant exposure to practices like prayer and Bible readings meant I was constantly provided with opportunities to apply my faith. Since leaving school, I've been challenged by the need for more independence in my faith and implement these practices more intentionally in my daily routine.
What goals did you set yourself when you finished at WCC, and did you stick to them?
After graduating, I sought to expand my network and meet friends from a more diverse set of backgrounds. My time in university so far has provided me with many opportunities to branch out and meet not-so like-minded individuals, which has been really encouraging for me personally and (surprisingly) spiritually.
What drew you to your area of work or study this year, and what do you love about it?
I'm entering my 3rd year studying Law and Commerce at Monash University. I grew an interest in Law due to Yr10 Work Experience at a Magistrates’ Court. I was exposed to the severe lack of accessible legal representation and felt challenged to serve the community through increasing access to justice through the legal system. My interest in Commerce grew through helping WCC sausage sizzles or Make Poverty History club events! I've continued to work in the social justice space. Currently, I'm volunteering as a project manager at a homelessness charity, which has been challenging yet incredibly gratifying.
What is the best piece of advice you've ever been given?
Using the ACTS acronym (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, and Supplication) as a structure for prayer. This really changed how I approached the spiritual practice of prayer!
What excites you most about the future?
I've recently established and launched my own tutoring company, Double Check Tutoring, which specialises in mathematics tutoring to Primary, Secondary and VCE Students. Having hired 3 other tutors, I am excited to see where this goes! I'm also launching a podcast called ‘Double Check Your Future’, which will involve conversations I have with friends (some being my peers at WCC!) about their degrees or certificates, hopefully providing undecided VCE students with some insight into the variety of career paths on offer. I hope this will provide Students with some clarity on their post-WCC lives and allow them to transition more seamlessly into life after high school!
What advice do you have for current students?
There are an infinite number of paths you can take after your time at WCC. For some, this may be intimidating, and for others, this may be exciting. I encourage all students to:
- Engage in hobbies and interests that may turn into careers in the future. It is never too early to see whether you enjoy an area of work, or to see whether committing many hours into an interest can lead somewhere.
- Enjoy the company of your friends at WCC. With many going different ways after High School, catching up with these friends often becomes a much more difficult task to do regularly.
- Pray about the direction in which God wants to direct your future after school. Attempting to direct your own future in your own might can only get you so far.
Any additional comments?
Check out our website if you are interested in our tutoring services or contact me at mason@doublechecktutoring.com if you have any questions. Also keep an eye out for the podcast. Updates are posted on Instagram and Facebook which can be found here!
Thank you for having me and thank you to all the friends and teachers I met at WCC who have supported me throughout my Primary and Secondary school years!
