Staff Profile

Nic Hempel | Year 6 Teacher

When did you join The Friends' School?

December 2021. I remember standing on a lush green soccer oval, the smell of freshly mown grass rising up through baking 46 degree heat, looking out at the Macdonnell Range in Alice Springs. I was offered my position over the phone. I had recently committed to returning to Tasmania with my family and the opportunity couldn't have come at a better time.

How long have you been teaching?

I first taught 22 years ago, whilst studying music at the Tas Conservatorium. I picked it up again in Central Australia, teaching cello, violin and guitar at various schools. My children inspired me to move into classroom teaching and I've worked in primary schools ever since.

What is your favourite thing you have done this year?

I've settled into a new classroom with new colleagues. I've led terrific students through the final stage of the Primary Years Program and loved supporting them with the Exhibition. I've also reconnected with Tasmanian family and friends, visited special places and started new connections. A single favourite thing would have to be paddling with forty dolphins in the Derwent last weekend. There was even a baby!

Where is your favourite place in the world?

Right now... Maria Island/wukaluwikiwayna. I spent most of my childhood summers looking at it from the mainland. More recently, I've visited many times, run the tracks, ridden most of them and enjoyed lots of swimming. I'm hoping to paddle around it one day.

What is your secret talent (that won't be so secret now)?!

Tough question. Talents? I'm not sure I've got any!

I asked my family... My youngest daughter thinks I'm creative. My older daughter said that I'm good at giving thought to everybody engaging in an activity (sounds like being inclusive). My partner responded that I'm great at planning adventures and am consistent. Her example of my consistency was that I rode my bike up Napoleon St every school day this year (except 2). I love my family!
