YEAR 7 NEWS…
It is hard to believe we are two thirds of the way through Term 1 already with Easter quickly approaching!
Students should be settled into the day-to-day life at St Mary’s and busy working on homework and assessment at this stage of the term. During this time of the term your child should be practising good study habits by allocating time at home to complete homework and work on upcoming assessments.
It is recommended that students should be completing around 20 minutes per subject each night on revision or homework. When the student has a double for that day, they should then complete 40 minutes for that subject. Therefore, each afternoon or evening a time slot of around 1.5 – 2 hours should be allocated for this to occur. In some circumstances extracurricular activities can play havoc with meeting these requirements, and therefore the work will need to be caught up the next day or extra perhaps the day before. The timeslot for the homework should be broken up if possible so that students are not becoming fatigued and therefore not using the time effectively. An hour prior to dinner and an hour after dinner would be favourable, however, I understand there are other commitments in family’s schedules, and this may not always be possible.
It is important that these study habits are formed now, so it becomes easier each year to increase as the workload and expectations enhance over the duration of secondary school. Should you seek further clarification or assistance in setting up a study or homework plan with your child please let me know and a template to support you in this area can be arranged.
In Year 7, we have some exciting opportunities for the cohort coming up in Week 9. Firstly, our first ever Year 7 BIG NIGHT OUT will take place on Thursday March 25th, in the evening from 6:00 – 9:00 pm. The theme is HAWAIIAN for the evening with best dressed awarded to a male and female. During community pastoral group students were explained the expectations of appropriate dress for this evening. If you have any questions regarding the dress, please let me know. I look forward to the evening with the Year 7 cohort.
After the Big Night Out, the Year 7 students will be involved in a Welcome to St Mary’s Pastoral Day on Friday March 26. This event will take place at St Mary’s and the Woree Pool. This will be a great day for students to become involved in the St Mary’s way of life and learn about how to act and be responsible citizens following in the footsteps of Mary. The afternoon will comprise of some fun activities at the Woree Pool.
Please be sure to respond to the above two events through parent slips at your earliest convenience to make sure your child can attend. As the pastoral day is a school compulsory event please notify me through email if your child is unable to attend the day as well as indicating this on the parent slip.
