Years 10 -12 Update

February 2021

CAREERS UPDATE

With Term 1 coming to a close, it’s still all systems go for the Careers Department as so many students across the Goldsworthy Campus are engaged in activities directly relating to their chosen pathway

There are 20 students currently undertaking a School Based Apprenticeship or Traineeship (SBAT) this year in industries such as Early Childhood Education and Care, Warehousing, Allied Health Services, Education Support, Commercial Biscuit Production and Business Administration  - just to name a few.   They attend independent training and a work place every week as they work towards a national recognised Cert II or Cert III qualification.  For more information about what SBATs  - please visit the Geelong region SBAT website :

An upside of the COVID -19 pandemic is that organisations have had to think of new ways to get their news and messages out to people, and this has included all the Partners, Universities and TAFEs that work closely with NBC Careers Department.  As a result – there have been many webinars and information sessions offered on line and these are regularly advertised on the Compass newsfeed, and all parents and students are reminded to regularly check their compass feeds to see what is on offer.

An example of what has been available in Term 1 includes:

  • Deakin University - course information sessions
  • ATSI students interested in RMIT University
  • The Smith Family - Career Mentor Program
  • Victoria University - Have a VU student ring you to talk about life at Uni
  • ACU Webinar- Entry and Pathway Options

A real focus of the Careers Department for 2021 will be getting students excited about Work Experience, and so far 2  have sourced their own employers and will be undertaking a placement very soon. Work experience Program is where students attend a real workplace, are treated as an employee, receive an income for their work, and gain a reference letter to be used in their resumes for future job applications.

Here is Farzana, Year 10 completing her on-line Safe@Work training in preparation of her going out to work very soon.

Good luck Farzana.

VCE Update

Recently Year 11 Ancient History students have been researching cuneiform, the first writing system developed. To understand the process we made styluses by sanding down bamboo chopsticks, then use them to create our own replica ancient stone tablets out of modelling clay. On their tablets they depicted the evolution of the writing system from simple symbols to much more complex characters, and also wrote their name in cuneiform!

 VCAL NEWS

During this Term Senior VCAL students Cooper, Bleh, Sarah and Teniesha

investigated the issue of ageism in society.

The students decided to take action and organise a volunteer experience for their class at Baptcare Coast Haven Community. The aim of the experience was to gain a greater understanding of the needs and issues faced by the community members and to facilitate activities designed to improve wellbeing.

Here are some insightful reflections from the students:

I really enjoyed the experience it open up my eyes and really changed my perspective. I enjoyed talking to Gary he was very genuine and reminded me of a primary school teacher I had. Also it was pretty cool hearing their views, growing up and life advice. It felt like hearing from my own pops passing down his wisdom. At the start there was some pressure since it was a new environment but they were very welcoming and a few chit chats later it felt like I've been there many times. I felt like I achieved a lot today and got out of it more than I expected. It was an amazing first time experience, connecting with them and learning from them. I wonder about the others that I didn't talk to, what characteristic do they have? – Bleh Htoo

Today we walked to the baptcare aged care center to ask questions and to get to know and speak to the elderly. I enjoyed getting to see the facilities and the staff the aged care center has to offer, and also getting to meet and talk to the elderly people about their past, what they enjoyed, lessons they learnt and advice to pass down to the youth. I also enjoyed seeing how the facility was run with set timetables showing different events such as “beer (cordial) pong” and also showing a note when "nbc students" were coming to visit. Carmel was the carer at the time we were there and she ran them through a trivia question sheet, showed them exercises and stretches and made them morning tea. Cooper and I spoke to an elderly man name Forrest, from Boston America, he had told us that he had lived in Australia for 16 years, his favourite moments growing up were meeting and dating people, and his favourite place he's visited was Alaska, he said it was a beautiful place. He also had a really strong american accent. After morning tea we played a few games of bingo and I helped out a man named Joe. I achieved more out of it than I thought, by getting comfortable with the elderly and speaking with them about their lives when they were younger.
