Head of Sport Report

Joe Priest

The sport program has been extremely busy over the last two weeks. The year 7 group have been enjoying Saturday mornings at the local pool and have had a good introduction to sport here at KWS. We hosted the WAS hockey trials and the WAS swimming carnival last week. Congratulations to the students who were selected to attend the AICES hockey carnival next week.

WAS swimming went well with a great atmosphere created with swimmers from 5 different schools in attendance. Our swimmers had the opportunity to race before we head off to ISA swimming next week. KWS performed well winning the overall Co-Ed shield, Boys shield and Girls shield.

A special thanks goes out to the Duke of Edinburgh, Boarding students and Staff who gave up three hours of their weekend to assist with the running of the carnival.

Congratulations to Mac Webster who has been selected into the NSWCIS cricket team. This is a fantastic effort in amongst some very good quality players.

Mountains & Plains Champs - Lithgow 13/14 Feb

Kim Taylor

What a weekend??? The weather threw everything at us. Torrential rain on Saturday, freezing Sunday morning and I end up sunburnt….what the hell!

Big thanks to all the parents for taking their children to Lithgow and supporting the swim club with their representation. Big commitment from all, (special mention to Steve Gough who apparently forced his wife to attend Saturday?????). Everyone’s help around the camp was really appreciated and a lovely catch up Saturday night. Overall a great weekend of racing, 80 medals, 4 age group champions and PBs to burn from 26 athletes. The younger swimmers had a blinder, swimming the house down. Elizabeth Croft, Izzie Provost , Tom Karrasch and Grace Lowther all making a big splash into the big time and accredited themselves very well. Will Garard swam tough all weekend along scoring a couple of medals with Matt Lowther grabbing 7 including a gold in the 100m back. Charlotte Williams swam consistent PBs all weekend taking home 6 medals. Hamish Seale had a couple of big swims with a 10 second PB in the 100m Breaststroke and 9 second PB in the 100m free, all the big kids just cried those drops are a thing of the past for them. Chloe Provost finished with 8 bronze and a couple of PBs, (swimmer to watch). Oscar Chandler- Sullivan biggest PB of the meet 15 seconds in the 100m free!!!

The big kids just had a tough race meet. Most of them flat from the work load of the previous week, part of their prep for NSW Country next week. Team Captains Catie Crisp and Olli McLaughlin did a great job rallying the troops and adding to the medal tally, Catie 5 golds and Ollie 9 gold. Emily Clunas battled injury all meet but still managed a bronze. Her sidekick, Edwina Waterman finished up with 1 silver and 5 bronze, but most importantly, won the “lolly jar guessing competition” to grand celebration, arched up a bit when I told her that Big John had already been into them. Kyla Brown and Elli McMiles were really flat after smashing themselves during the week, still they managed 8 and 6 medals respectively. Lazo Jalal swam well just missing out on a couple of medals. Angus Ervin finished with a respectable 3 gold and 5 silver and Toby (never say die) Gough a silver and bronze but swam a 25 second PB in the 1500m free! Oscar McLaughlin 5 medals including 2 gold, wasting your time playing throw & giggle mate, pool is the place for you. Tommasso Cornelius-Feltus finished with 7 medals but not before a frank conversation with the head coach after a pretty soft 400. Big sister Mercede accounted for 7 golds and 5 silver, she also was awarded age champion and distance shield. Tom Pell was pushing it all weekend, ended up with 2 relay gold, 3 silver and 5 bronze.

Top point scorers for the club were Mercede Cornelius-Feltus in the girls and Tom Pell for the boys. Overall we finished 3rd on the combined point score with the Girls finishing 2nd and the Boys 3rd in their respected point scores.

1st XI Douglas Shield v Pacific Hills CS

On Wednesday, 17th Feb, Pacific Hills CS traveled up to Kinross Main Oval to play against the KWS 1st XI in the second round of Douglas Shield, KWS had a bye in the first. George Cumming won the toss and elected the bat.

Jono Rasmussen (3) and Charlie Tink opened the batting and handled the new ball well, as did Mac Webster (9) before a direct hit run out. The team was 2/31 to finish the 13th over. Tink and Cumming rotated the strike and ran hard to get the score to about the 100 mark before Charlie’s shoulder caused issues and he retired hurt. Tom Kiss (31) came to the crease and Cumming and Kiss got the score to 3/152. Cumming reaching 50 during the partnership. Hitting three sixes in an over at recess to get the crowd up and about. Luke Hunter (7) helped get the score to 4/177. Before Sam Gee (7) accompanying Cumming to 5/200. Gee and Cumming ran hard to get George to 100. Dudley Shepherd (6 n.o.) and Cumming then accelerated with some clean striking before Cumming fell in the last over. Seven sixes and six fours later Cumming departed for 139. Tink then resumed his innings and KWS finished on 6/250, Tink finished on 34 n.o.

After the innings break Mac Webster and Nelson Shepherd (2/19) had the visitors in all sorts at 2/5 with the crowd once again on the edge of their seats. Constant wickets fell with some good fielding too. Harry Priest (3/18) picked up two wickets in an over to break a slowly building partnership. Cumming took 1/24, Tancred 1/5 and Nelson picked up a run out. Webster helped to clean up the tail and finished with (2/22), as KWS bowled Pacific Hills CS out for 88 in the 33rd over.

1st XI v CYMS

Despite rain throughout the week Kinross 1st XI were about to get a full day of cricket. Kinross bowled first on a batting friendly Wade Park and a fast outfield allowed CYMS to get on the front foot posting 7/319 after 65 overs. Nelson Shepherd the pick of the bowlers with 3/83 off 16 overs, four others chipped in with one wicket each.

Kinross had to bat for 45 minutes to finish the first days play and Jono Rasmussen (5) was the only wicket to fall and KWS were set for a good day two at 1/39.  Mr Prowse (39), Mac Webster (8) and James Larkin put on a good foundation. Before Prowse and Webster fell and captain George Cumming joined Larkin at 3/82. Their 130 run partnership helped to progress the score to 3/212 before the later was dismissed, it should be known that of this partnership Cumming only scored 22. During this period Larkin brought up both his fifty and hundred with some very clean striking. A few wickets fell in quick succession with KWS 7/227 with the loss of Larkin (122 21x4), D Shepherd and L Hunter all back to the sheds. Nelson Shepherd and James Glasson fought through a tough session of batting churning the score over up to 7/270, where Shepherd fell for 20 off 90 balls. Glasson (31 off 91) , A Tancred and reserve D Hunter put in a serious effort but fell agonizingly short of CYMS total by 19 runs. This finish was great for spectators and the First XI should be very proud of their efforts.

Kinross’ 298 was the highest score for Kinross in the Orange/Orange and Bathurst first grade comp since online recording (at least 2007).

KWS 13 Sixers vs Millthorpe

The Sixers played some good cricket to record a win against Millthorpe on Saturday.

After being invited to bat the Sixers mustered 104 from their allotted 25 overs.

There were some excellent innings played by Ashton Nock (32) and Sam Hughes (26n.o.) and they were well supported by team-mates who batted for their quota of deliveries and retired such as Hamish Slack Smith and Zoe Wood as well as Henry Baldwinson who was dismissed one ball short of his quota.

The Sixers then restricted Millthorpe to 90 to win the game. There was some impressive bowling from Ashton Nock, Henry Baldwinson and Charlie Keirle and some sharp run outs at crucial times of the Millthorpe innings. However, the Sixers kept Millthorpe in the contest because of dropped catches and an excessive number of no-balls and wides.

Thanks to all those who came out to support the team.

By Mr Bruce Kerridge

KWS 13 Sixers vs Cavaliers

The Sixers went into their last game of the season looking to bat their overs and put in a consistent effort with the ball and in the field. Although they were defeated by the second place Cavaliers, the Sixers did bowl well at times and almost batted out their 25 overs. Most importantly, the Sixers showed a lot of fight as a team and there were some standout performances from individuals with both bat and ball.

Cavaliers won the toss and batted. After 8 overs they were 3/15 thanks to some fine off spin bowling from Charlie Keirle who achieved drift and turn and finished with 3/7 from 3 overs and some mean seam bowling from Henry Baldwinson who finished with 1/5 from 3 overs. Unfortunately for the Sixers the Cavaliers star batsman took the game away from them with a big innings. He was helped by some dropped catches but played very well. Cavaliers finished on 7/122.

In reply, the Sixers were in a world of trouble after losing early wickets. 5/16 after 8 overs is not a healthy position to be in no matter what the situation. But the Sixers fought back thanks to some good batting from Sam Martin, James McRae, Sam Hughes and Henry Baldwinson who all showed a lot of determination. In the end the Sixers were dismissed well short of the runs required but only just short of their 25 overs and deserve credit for this.

Thanks to the Sixers parents for supporting the team and helping out with umpiring on the day.

Round 3 was again a wash out and games against St. Paul’s Grammar were cancelled due to flooding fields. Rather than a trip to Sydney, the girls played internal fixtures at KWS. This was a great opportunity for our teams to practise set plays and defensive structures before tough matches against archrivals Barker in Round 4.

Round 4 KWS hosted Barker. What was a glorious day for touch football, the KWS girls played some outstanding touch football across all grades. A tough loss for our Senior A allowed our girls to reflect on some specific areas of their game to work on and refine. Senior B, Junior A and Junior C were all victorious against Barker. Whilst Junior B and Junior D only just lost by a single try.

Team Reports

KWS Senior A

The Senior A team have had some tough games so far this season. With no wins on the board - yet, the girls are still showing up to training with a positive attitude and desire to improve on their performances. Anita Lewis has been outstanding for the Senior A’s by setting the tone and bringing high energy to attacking plays and line defence. Chanel Knight has demonstrated her experience in the team by communicating set plays with her team mates to help assist in line attack structures.  Matilda O’Reilly has been driving the ball with blistering speed and setting a great foundation for our team to work from. Heidi Ferguson has been strong in defence with a determination not to be beaten. Her attitude to improve is also commendable. With Blue Mountain Grammar coming up in our next round game, we hope to assert our set attacking plays and come away with a win.

KWS Senior B

The Senior B girls have had varied results over the season. A huge effort to turn around an 8-2 loss against Redlands into a 5-4 win against Barker has been the highlight of the season. The girls have been diligent in their approach to learning new set plays, defensive structures and the touch football basics. Saskia has been strong in the middle, driving the ball well and setting some great foundations for the team to attack. Stephanie Wong has been agile in attack making some great meters in attack. With our final round game approaching, I am looking forward to seeing another significant improvement in the teams performance.

KWS Junior A

The KWS Junior A's have started the ISA season off strong winning both games so far. The first game was a tight battle against Redlands where KWS held them out 3-2. The Ivey sisters (Charlotte and Katie) combined for some well-run attacking moves that pressured the Redlands defence. There was great communication by Eden Hawker and Claudia Mason in defence to hold the lead and defend out the game.

The second game against Barker was a great display by KWS who defeated Barker 7-1. Isabelle Johnston and Poppy Nuthall showed great speed in their drives to get KWS up to their attacking line where Phoebe Smith finished off a handful of tries out wide. Great defence was again shown by the whole team only conceding one try against them.

KWS Junior B

The KWS Junior B’s have improved tenfold since the beginning of the ISA competition. The girls have worked well together as a team especially in attack. At training, the girls are enthusiastic and eager to learn, even during fitness. This season we have focussed on passing accuracy and counter attacking plays. Halle and Scarlett excel in counterattack with their speed with Alice always backing them up as dummy half. We also have emphasised the importance of shifting and man to man marking in defence. Our only try scorer this season so far is Jorja with hopes that we can score a few more this weekend and progress into the finals.

KWS Junior C

The Junior C team have improved greatly throughout the season. Winning the game against Barker 2-1 on the weekend. This was a tough game for our girls with tries coming in the second half. The girls managed to keep Barker scoreless by great defensive communication by Laura Atkinson taking charge.  The girls attack was great with Daisey Wakeham, Sarah Johnston and Alice Hansen driving down the field. At half time the score was still nil all and after a good team chat the girls went out and started strong again. Within the first 8 minutes Laura Atkinson went over the line to get us up 1-0 with a great play on the wing with Alice. There was great speed by Isobel Wong and Ruby De Vries on the wing.  Barker scored to even it up, but our girls dug deep and put another try on the board for KWS. The girls defended well but their attack was amazing all game and played great across the park. The girls should be very proud with their hard-fought win!

KWS Junior D

The KWS Junior D team have worked hard at training and the results are reflecting in the growth of knowledge and skills by the girls. With a huge 12-3 win against Redlands the girls were busting with confidence. Lily McBeth demonstrated her speed with multiple line breaks, whilst Amanda showed her touch football experience reading the play and making some great defensive plays. A tough loss against Barker, only losing by a single try has fuelled the girls determination to train hard and prepare for their next game against St. Spyridon.
