Wellbeing Guest Speakers – Ysafe and Sleep Connection

Have you ever wondered what happens when you are asleep?

Year 6 were very fortunate to find out when they were involved in both the cybersafety and sleep sessions organised for the HS Wellbeing Day in Week 5.

On Wednesday, Year 6 were joined by Yasmin from YSafe who led them through a very helpful session looking at how they can keep themselves safe online. Yasmin’s approach was one where she acknowledged that many students are active on the internet and rather than scaring them off it, gave them some helpful tips to keep them safe.

Austin from 6H said that he already knew a lot of the things that were spoken about as they have regularly reviewed cybersafety in class since getting their iPads. One pointer that he took away was not to make friends with anyone online unless you are friends with them in real life. Jack was reminded that there are people online who will take advantage of you and that you shouldn’t share any of your information over the internet.

On the Thursday morning, Year 6 followed up their Wellbeing sessions with a chat from Lisa Maltman from the Sleep Connection.

Olivia found it interesting learning about REM and how much your eyes are moving whilst you are asleep, whilst Tilly was fascinated to hear we spend around a third of our lives asleep, highlighting how important sleep actually is.

These sessions compliment our social and emotional learning program run in the Junior School on a weekly basis. In the JS we think that it is necessary to keep revisiting these conversations, particularly around cybersafety as students grow and engage with new media and digital platforms. With the idea that wellbeing is about feeling good and functioning well, we want to support our students as they navigate life’s challenges and trust that these sessions helped provide support and encouragement in these areas.

Fostering a Sense of Wonder

We were thrilled with the response to Area 51 and Robotics commencing in Week 5, with almost 50 students participating in these new extra-curricular initiatives.

The purpose of Area 51 and Robotics is to foster a sense of wonder in students. By introducing adventurous topics, we are hoping to spark curiosity, inquiry and questioning of the world around them. Increased exposure of metacognitive skills and activities such as Area 51 and Robotics, not only nurtures wonder and awe, but stands students in good stead to be life-long learners.

In Area 51 this term we are exploring ‘Science Magic’. Last week students participated in different experiments exploring the concept of transpiration. We made plants ‘sweat’, water ‘walk’ and flowers change colour! In weeks ahead we have experiments planned surrounding solids, liquids and chemical reactions.

In Robotics, students from across Years 5-7 attended an introductory session to the First Lego League Robotics competition. The excitement in the air was palpable as we discussed engineering and coding concepts they would embark on. Stay tuned for more updates on this team as they commence a year-long commitment to problem solving across the Junior and Senior School.

K-2 Visit to the Theatre

What an amazing opportunity the students from K-2 had on 2nd March when they went to see the Very Hungry Caterpillar at the Orange Civic Theatre. A favourite book for generations came to life through the use of puppets and had the students sitting on the edge of their seats.

Highlights for some students were:

Anoushka (K) – It was just like the book. They also had the Bear and the Spider story.

Imogen (Yr 1) – My favourite part was where the fat caterpillar moved the leaf.

Sophie (Yr 1) – I liked it when the girl was moving back and it was pitch black.

Madeleine (Yr 1) – I loved the excursion.

Dylan (Yr 2) – The caterpillar was the best because it grew fat.

Janagan (Yr 2) – The funniest part was where the fat caterpillar was dancing on the leaf.

Digby M (Yr 2) – I liked the bear because it was funny. They used their hands to move the puppets’ feet.

It seems the Very Hungry Caterpillar and Eric Carle’s other stories will never get old and it was great to experience these stories coming to life on the stage at the theatre.

Thank you K-2 teachers for taking the classes out for this exciting morning.

Junior School Chess in 2021

Students in the Junior School have the opportunity to become involved in a lunchtime chess experience. In recent years chess has been a popular activity with the students. KWS enters teams in regional and state competitions where we have reached the finals in 2018 and 2019.

Who: Students from Years 1- 6 who are wanting to learn to play, improve their chess or gain selection in a Primary School Chess team (Years 3 - 6).

Term 1 & 2 Focus: Students will develop skills and learn about the art of chess. They will have the opportunity to play social games and experience the strategy of game situations. As the year progresses a team will be selected to represent KWS at chess competitions based on the level of student skill development.

When: Thursday lunch time commencing Thursday, 4 March

Time: 12:40pm - 1:15pm (students are welcome to bring their lunch)

Staff: Mr Pritchard

Group Numbers: To provide the best learning experience for your child the group is open to the first 24 students who attend each day.

Enrolment: Interested students can sign up each week to be included. The more regularly a student attends, the more opportunities they have to develop their skills.
