From the Principal

Welcome Back 2017

A very warm welcome back to the 2017 school year. It is wonderful to have everyone back safe and well. I would like to welcome on behalf of our school community, new staff, children and families to West Beach Primary School. Our children have enjoyed  a smooth start to the new school year and have had fun supporting new students and sharing their school holiday experiences with their classmates.

Welcome to our 32 new Reception students as well as the other 14 students who have enrolled with us in years 1-7. We are beginning the year with a total of 242 students. If anyone knows of other families wishing to enrol with us for 2017, please ask them to do so before the end of this week.

As well as our new families we welcome Colleen Dekeukelaire to our staff as  a Reception/ Year 1 teacher in Room 2 for 2017. A warm welcome back also to Marie Newcombe who has returned after having her first child. Marie will be working in the role as R-7 Science teacher and Learning support.  Mathew Charleston has been seconded to DECD Central Office for term 1 to support with a an assessment and data project and we congratulate Tina Mouzakitis who has won the role of Deputy Principal for Term 1. Julie Wright will be teaching Drama R-7 and Room 8 on Thursday and Friday with Rosemary Griffin.

This year we will be implementing a whole school approach to supporting student wellbeing in line with the new DECD Wellbeing for Learning and Life Framework. Wellbeing and Attendance is a 2017 Site improvement priority area as well as our continued focus on strengthening Literacy and Numeracy learning outcomes for students.

Our  Wellbeing focus for Term one  is "Belonging." Each class will be exploring what it means to belong to their class, our school and the wider school community. You will hear more about this learning throughout the term. We will be also aiming to increase our attendance rate this year from 93.2% to 95%, which is the DECD Expectation.

Communication

School newsletters are a critical form of communication for us and  are available in an electronic versions via the website and the Skoolbag app. Newsletters will be published fortnightly on the  Friday of even weeks of the term starting next week.

If you have not got the Skoolbag app on your phone or tablet, please consider this as it is a great way of staying in touch (search for West Beach Skoolbag in your app store).  A calendar  is available on Skoolbag with events outlined for  Term 1. Class teachers will also provide information through class newsletters and on Edmodo for 3-7 students.

You will also receive your child's  class teacher's email address so that you can communicate with them via email.

Our 2017 Student Free Days will be confirmed in next week's newsletter after Governing Council approval.
