2018 Aboriginal Student STEM Congress

This week, as part of Reconciliation Week, Marcus, Jade, EJ, Jo and Carmel went to the 2018 Aboriginal Student STEM Congress. The congress was organised to prepare and inspire students for a future career in STEM.

On the Monday, we listened to an astronomer talk about how stars and the solar system have played a significant role in Aboriginal culture for thousands of years.  We then went for a visit to the Museum where we learnt about Genetics and how this is helping Aboriginal people find their families.

On the Tuesday, we had a lovely stroll to the Botanical Gardens where a plant expert guided us around the gardens. He shared his knowledge of how plants have been used by Aboriginal people for food, shelter and medicine.

Each afternoon, we got to do some small group activities.  These activities showed us how STEM can be used in dance, music, problem solving, construction and water filtration. Jo learnt a lot about how we can share some of this knowledge with everyone at school.

The two days were interesting, educational and fun. They have definitely inspired us to consider a future in STEM.
