Around the School
Moama to Menindee Water Drive
Over the Labour Day Long weekend Boyd Butcher and a group drove to Menindee to deliver the water our school community donated.
Here are some details from Boyd who spoke at Assembly this week to keep students and teachers updated on what is happening:
Thank you Moama Anglican Grammar, for your efforts in raising water for Menindee, a town that has no water for human use.
Our school raised 28,000 litres of water.
We travelled to Menindee on the Labour Day weekend. It took 10 hours to get there. The dirt roads were very rough, we had 2 flat tyres.
The country North of Wentworth was very dry.
As soon as we arrived the families were asking for water.
The population of Menindee is just 500. They were so happy to see us, that they told us they have been practicing a concert for us tonight. Traditional dancing and songs. We also played games until late Saturday evening.
On Sunday we visited all the dry lakes whose area is bigger than Sydney Harbour.
We saw huge fish struggling in the water for air.
In many places along the river, huge diesel powered aerators are trying to put oxygen into the water, to keep the fish alive.
The water in the river behind the town is full of poisonous blue green algae, so it can't be used by the people.
The Menindee School had very little water, so most of our water was delivered to them.
Water was also taken around to some of the very old residents of Menindee, who could not pick up the water themselves.
This is the second delivery we have made, the first one was on Australia Day when we delivered 3 semi trailers with 80,000 litres.
With some money donated, we have bought and installed Puratec filters into every home in Menindee.
Many other towns on the Darling river have this problem: Bourke, Loath, Wilcannia, Pooncarie and Tilpa.
We are glad with your help in putting smiles on their faces for a while.
Thank you to those who donated.
