Around the outdoor classrooms

Year 9 students visited Wilsons Promontory during week 9, where we took part in various activities involving environmental, survival and fitness elements to improve their overall outdoor skills.

We learned many important skills during the camp, the focus being on improving our independence and our responsibility in an outdoor environment, which is what the year nine outdoor education camp is most well known for. We demonstrated these skills by organising our own meals in groups, which we planned prior to the camp, and taking part in activities in the outdoor environment.

Each of us took part in a 7km hike up Mount Bishop, taking time to acknowledge and reflect upon the natural scenery around us as well as the traditional owners of this land (the Boon Wurrung people). We also came down Darby River, and took a surfing lesson at Darby Bay, improving our resilience as we attempted to catch a wave back to shore, which many students accomplished.

We came across some furry friends on our adventures as well: there were plenty of wombat encounters around the campsite, as they were looking for food in the trailers and tents; a kangaroo was also found walking mischievously around the tents at night!

On the way back from Wilsons prom we took a visit down to the squeaky beach and had some time to reflect on what we most enjoyed, what wasn’t our favourite thing and what activity we found most challenging. This was a chance for students to relax and have some free time.

Our time at camp was amazing. We had heaps of fun, and learned lots about the prom, while building our outdoor skills!

Thanks heaps to Miss Dixon, Miss Barton, Miss Bowers, Miss Goldman, and Mr Sinclair for giving up your time so that we could enjoy this camp!  It couldn’t have been done without your support!
