NAPLAN 2022

This year our school will be participating in NAPLAN Online for Years 3 and 5 students from Tuesday 10th of May until Friday 20th of May.

This will mean students will complete the NAPLAN Writing, Reading, Conventions of Language and Numeracy tests on computers, excluding the Year 3 Writing test which will still be delivered using paper.  Schools across the country are transitioning from paper-based to computer-based this year. Online NAPLAN will provide more precise results and are more engaging for students. One of the main benefits of online assessments is they can be adaptive, where the test presents questions that may be more or less difficult depending on a student’s responses.

For some students, NAPLAN can be overwhelming, at SKiPPS, we prepare students by embedding the skills and knowledge required for NAPLAN in our teaching and learning. We also see the importance of talking about our feelings towards NAPLAN in our Circle Time sessions. Circle Time is an opportunity for students to share their feelings and develop strategies to help them manage their emotions during assessments.

At home, you can continue to support your child in preparing for NAPLAN by following some of these helpful tips. Some of these tips are also linked to some very useful articles which provide further information on how to undertake some of these tips.

  1. Keep routines – make sure children get plenty of sleep and a good breakfast on the day of the testing.
  2. Teach helpful thinking – encourage them to believe they can do it.  Help them to say ‘I’ll give it a go”.
  3. Clear expectations – talk through what will happen, how long they will work for, and that they will get a break.
  4. Encourage confidence – for example, encourage them to look through the paper and complete the questions they know they can answer first.
  5. Discuss feelings – encourage the children to discuss how they feel.  Listen with empathy so they feel understood and know their feelings are normal.
  6. Most of all have a positive parent attitude that shows you believe in your child – children take their cues from the adults around them.
