Italian

Preps
It has been a wonderful start to 2022 Italian for Preps. Now that they have grasped school routines and where their language classroom is, they have confidently began to learn some basic Italian. Preps have a basic idea of where Italy is, that the shape of the country is boot-like and that it is on the other side of the world.
Students can respond when asked “What is your name? Come ti chiami?”, by answering “Mi chiamo ….” . They have been working on learning their numbers from 0 - 10 and using this knowledge to play games such as Tombola, clapping games and dice games, but they do require further practise. Preps love to sing particularly the ‘Ciao Buongiorno’ song and informally, the ‘Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes’ song in Italian.
Grade 1
The Grade 1 students have settled extremely well and have confidently plunged into learning Italian with gusto and enthusiasm. Students have revised commonly used phrases to greet others according to the age of the person and time of day as well as introduce themselves, ask and respond to how they are feeling and how old they are. Students have revised counting from 0 to 10 and are building on their ability to count to 20 while apply this knowledge to board games. Students enjoyed the story of Pinocchio and made their own Pinocchio puppet whilst informally learning and or revising the names of many body parts. In Grade 1 students have a better understanding that Italy is located on the other side of the world and the capital city of Italy is Rome. This invoked a curiosity about The Colosseum for many students. Some can recognise that the seasons are opposite to our seasons in the Southern Hemisphere. Students are more familiar with the simple meaning of the Italian flag.
Grade 2
Grade 2 students have continued to revise commonly used phrases to greet others according to the age of the person and time of day as well as introduce themselves, ask and respond to how they are feeling and how old they are. Students can competently count to 20 and apply this knowledge to board games. They have geographical knowledge of where Italy is in the world and some of the surrounding countries, and which continent and hemisphere Italy lies within. Students constructed a simple self descriptive text that includes what food they like for each meal of the day as well as their favourite sport using simple sentence structures to describe in both oral and written form. Students read their text out aloud to me with certainty and confidence and it is wonderful to hear their fluency.
