Grade Two

We can’t believe how quickly this term has gone and that we are already at the end of Term 1! We have been so delighted as to how the students have settled into the school year. We commenced our term with our Setting Up For Success program which has ensured that our students feel comfortable in their learning environment and ready to grow and develop to the best of their ability throughout the remainder of the year.
Literacy
In Literacy, students have been focusing on informative reading and writing. During our reading sessions, students have been participating in Readers Workshop where they have been using their skills to identify the difference between a fiction and non-fiction text, contents/index page and develop their guided reading skills. The students have been exposed to a variety of non-fiction texts and have been exploring some of their features. In writing, students worked through the writing process to produce a published information report on both an animal and a classmate. We were so impressed with the quality of work and enthusiasm towards their learning. Their reports were very impressive and the students enjoyed celebrating and evaluating their published pieces with their classmates.
Mathematics
In Mathematics students have focused on Place Value, Addition and Subtraction. Students have been able to apply their knowledge to worded problems using a range of strategies. We have completed mental computation strategies as an ongoing concept during our Mathematics sessions. Every week we focus on a different strategy to ensure a thorough understanding of basic number facts and operations. The Grade 2’s have also explored time, focusing on naming and ordering the months and seasons and using a calendar to identify specific and important dates.
Integrated
During our integrated sessions we have been exploring ‘Identity’. We commenced the unit with a provocation where students were to match the pictures of every teacher when they were a toddler to what they look like now. This provoked essential questions about identity and inspired further investigation of the subject. We also explored what makes us unique. Throughout the term we have also covered International Women’s Day and have implemented a number of Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships activities as well as Cyber Safety lessons.
We would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a Happy Easter. We hope you all have a safe and restful holiday.
