Grade One

General:
As Term 1 comes to a close, all of the Grade 1 teachers would like to share how impressed we are with the wonderful effort that each student has applied this term. It has been extremely pleasing to see students exercising more independence in entering the classroom and undertaking daily routines, as well as observing their welcoming manners as they continue to strengthen and establish new friendships with their peers in the classroom and across the cohort. We are wishing all families a happy Easter and hope that you have a wonderful and restful break ahead of you!
Mathematics:
Over the past few weeks, students have continued to familiarise themselves with our number system through the use of an assortment of concrete materials - unifix, bead frames, number charts, number lines and icy pole sticks. These visual and tangible tools have especially guided students during their exploration of addition and subtraction. Students have also begun to explore our Time concept, through the exploration of days of the week, months of the year and seasons, focusing on ordering them. To finish off our term, we have been exploring the features and types of 2D shapes in our world during our Easter week and have loved the creativity that each of them have exercised.
English:
During the second half of Term 1, we began our first writing unit exploring recount writing. The last few weeks have allowed for students to identify the structure of recounts through an assortment of mentor texts, as well as writing their own recounts about special moments and memories with appropriate vocabulary and structured sentences. Over the last two weeks, students have been beautifully publishing a piece of work that they were proud of, showcasing their developing ability to follow the writing process. Students have also continued to strengthen their retell skills in reading an assortment of books in the classroom and sharing 5 key details to demonstrate their understanding.
Integrated Studies:
Grade 1 students have continued to explore our Identity unit. They have continued to reflect on their likes and dislikes through the study of healthy choices and in making their own healthy lunch box. They have also showcased what is important to them through our ‘Me in a Bag’ task. It was so wonderful learning more about each of our students' interests outside of school as well as celebrating the beautiful diversity of the cultures which make up each of our classrooms. Our explorations of identity at the individual level also channelled into how we are connected to something larger, our community, where we celebrated International Women’s Day and the importance of habits and language which promotes equality between men and women.
