Mathletics - Engaging students in Maths
Just a friendly reminder that Mathletics is a great tool for students to use at home to help support their learning. Students can engage in ‘Live Mathletics’ to improve their automatic recall skills and/or complete activities based on specific maths concepts. The site is visual and easy for the students to use.
Everyday opportunities to talk about numeracy
A great way to increase mathematical dialogue is to look at opportunities to find the numeracy in real world examples. The upcoming Mothers Day Stall would be a great opportunity to talk to your students about Australian coins and the value of coins, the discussion could be extended to how much change would you receive from a given amount. Change of seasons, looking at a calendar and discussing facts and figures will help build your child’s confidence with numbers.
Talk Moves & Guidelines for Talk
This year we have been sharing resources on Talk Moves with our students, staff and school community. As a school, our focus has been on improving mathematical dialogue in the classroom. Increasing dialogue encourages students to elaborate on how they get to the given answer and explain their mathematical thinking.
As a staff we have collaborated on creating some Guidelines of Talk. These guidelines are being introduced throughout 2023, from Prep to Year 6, and across all subject areas. How the guidelines are introduced will depend on the age and grade of the students. The guidelines help create a classroom environment that fosters rich dialogue and collaboration at the School of the Good Shepherd. The guidelines have been created after reviewing research in the area, regular consultation with staff and feedback from our senior students. Please see the 6 guidelines that we have come up with.
