Sport Report

First of all I would like to offer my appreciation and thanks to all the parents and staff who have assisted with all the sporting events this term. It was an extremely busy term and without all the help I received it would not have been possible.
Swimming
Although the number of students who attended District Swimming was down from previous years we had a very successful day in the pool. The day before at school the swim team and I set a target of 26 students to qualify for Division Swimming. In order to qualify students have to finish in 1st or 2nd place. The team was very close to hitting the goal with 24 students qualifying for Division.
Unfortunately I was unable to attend the next round but from what I heard the students performed extremely well at Division Swimming. It was a change of venue and the team was back swimming in outdoor pool which they haven’t done since Northcote Aquatic Centre closed. The team made the trip out to Oak Park Sports Centre in Pascoe Vale minus the Grade 6 swimmers who were on camp. Again it was a successful day for the HPS swim team with plenty of podium finishes however the standard jumped considerably this year and we faced some tough teams. The qualifiers for Region consisted of the 9/10 boys freestyle relay team, Emily L who swam butterfly. Well done to the students who competed at Division.
On Thursday 30th March the students who qualified plus the Grade 6s who were granted an invite went back to Watermarc for Region Swimming. It was great day with all relay teams and students swimming individual races achieving personal bests in the pool.
Well done to the following students for swimming at Region:
- Emilia C – 50m Freestyle, 50m Butterfly
- Emily L – 50m Butterfly
- 12 Girls 4x50m Freestyle relay – Emilia C, Evangelynn L, Eva L, Piper H
- 12 Girls 4x50m Medley relay – Emilia C, Piper H, Skye S, Evangelynn L
- 12 Boys 4x50m Freestyle relay – Oscar F, Noah M, Henry M, Kai E
I would like to offer a big congratulations to one more team, the 9/10 Boys 4x50m Freestyle relay (Genoah S, Hugh E, Will R, Lachie C). They were seed 1 going into Region Swimming, 5 seconds faster than the next best team. They beat their Division time by over 3 seconds and were faster than 2nd place by 7 seconds. With their 1st place finish they qualified for the State Swimming Championships on Friday 28th April. The event will be streamed live and shared with the school so students can watch on the day.
Athletics
On Friday 31st March students selected to be part of the HPS Athletics Team headed to Willinda Park to compete against the other schools in the district. We took 62 students to represent the school and compete for a place at Division in Term 3. In order to make it through to Division students have to place 1st or 2nd in their track and field event. Every student was well behaved, respectful and showed great sportsmanship. Congratulations to all the students.

Soccer
On Friday 24 March, a team of 16 girls and 16 boys headed to Banyule Flats to play in the District Soccer Round. The teams played against Banyule, Viewbank, Rosanna Golf Links and St Martins. Both teams demonstrated good teamwork and sportsmanship.
The boys team played well but had a few unlucky moments that resulted in own goals a couple of the games which put them behind. The team clicked for the games against Rosanna Golf Links and Viewbank. They beat RGL easily and went to penalties for the game against Viewbank. Jake S was solid between the sticks saving a couple but the opposition keeper was also on form. Penalties went to 8 shots each with our final shot being saved. I’m looking forward to Term 3 and seeing what the team can do during Interschool sports.
The girls team were on fire the whole day winning all their games. They were pushed to penalties in their 3rd game against St Martins but Gwen F was a super stopper, saving 2 penalties to help the girls win. The girls team finished the day scoring a total of 7 goals. Goal of the day was Evangelynn L, with a superb free kick in the last 2 minutes of the Viewbank game to get the win and take the team to Division Soccer in Term 3. I would also like to mention our brilliant centre backs, Yasmine T and Piper H. They were a brick wall for every match, stopping nearly every attack. Congratulations to the following girls:
Rachel A, Emilia C, Shylah D, Milla D, Gwen F, Piper H, Gypsy HC, Evangelynn L, Yuxin L, Eva L, Mariah N, Ruth P, Maya S, Charlotte S, Adele V
Tennis
Congratulations to Esther M who competed at the Northern Metropolitan Regional Tennis Competition on Monday 3rd April. Esther won the competition and will now compete at the State Competition on Monday 22nd May.
Esther won both pool matches 6-0, her semi-final 6-1 and the final 6-0.
Well done Esther and good luck for State.
