Unit of Inquiry

In our current unit of inquiry 'Where we are in Place and Time' we have been looking into Australia’s Indigenous history. One of our activities was to study Indigenous artefacts and determine their use.

Our teacher then asked us to go out into the school yard to make one of the indigenous artefacts. Most people made spears by foraging for a stick then finding a rock to sharpen it on- by scraping up and down and so forth.  Some people made games using creativity and some made mini knives.

All the artefacts had to be made completely out of nature otherwise they weren’t made properly. This is to represent how the Indigenous Australians would have made it.  Using only what nature had to offer.

At the end of this activity we had to return all our “artefacts” back to nature.  The indigenous culture has taught us to only take from nature what we absolutely have to, to survive and no more.  That is sustainability.

Today we looked up facts about the Australian Indigenous flag on the computers. We looked up facts like who made the flag and what was the first flight of the flag.

We got to colour in the flag and paper chip the yellow middle part of the flag.

The yellow middle part of the flag represents the sun, the red of the flag is the earth and the black top represents the people.

The first flight of the flag was 9th of June 1971. Guess what? The day it was made was the same day as the first flight!!!

Indigenous Football Jumpers

Today we used lots of indigenous colours and symbols to design our own football jumpers.

Lots of people used the river bank symbol and the red, yellow and orange colours.  Some techniques included cross hatching and squiggly lines.  There were also snakes and kangaroos and lots of dot painting.

The best part was designing the patterns and colouring it in.

The best part of designing our own indigenous jumper was being creative with all the indigenous symbols. The red represents boys and the blue represents girls on my jumper.

Dreaming Stories

Over the last couple of weeks we have been working as a group on our Dreaming stories.  First we had to decide on the steps to success and then we filled a story board as our plan.  Our story had to include a lesson or message, an Aboriginal country, artefacts and be about nature.

Working in a group was fun, we sometimes had to negotiate and compromise our ideas to make sure we all got along. If we had a disagreement we used rock paper scissors to decide. Our group is looking forward to illustrating our story.

I liked doing the Dreaming stories because we could use our imagination and I think our story got better because we worked as a group and used all of our ideas.

Working in a group was difficult because it was hard deciding on something we all agreed on. When we couldn’t decide on something we combined our ideas together to come up with something new.
