Year 1 News

What a fortnight! The children have been engaged in a range of assessments over the past few weeks. We have been impressed with the children’s attitude towards learning and are happy with how they are tracking academically, as a collective group.

Literacy

Over the past fortnight our Year 1 students have enjoyed writing a range of texts including a narrative and a weekly recount. The children have also partaken in a reading Learning Task that focussed on the comprehension of an Indian Fable ‘The Elephant and The Mice’.

If you have not yet accessed your child’s task, your child’s work and teacher feedback can be accessed via the Compass Portal.

Readings Eggs

The Year 1 children have enjoyed using the Year 1 iPads to access Reading Eggs as part of our literacy sessions. Reading Eggs helps to make learning to read interesting and engaging for kids through a range of online games and activities. The teachers set assignments and tests for the children to complete in class and the children love gaining ‘golden eggs’ and other rewards for their efforts.

Within the Reading Eggs program the children utilise Reading Eggspress, this part of the program allows the students to read real books, improve spelling skills and help build age appropriate reading comprehension skills.

Over the school holidays we encourage all Year 1 children to continue using their Reading Eggs account. Student passwords are easily located at the front of each child’s reading journal. Following their personalised interactive journey via their ‘map’, helps build skills that complement nightly reading.

Language and Conventions

The language and conventions focus for the past fortnight has been contractions. The children have learnt the definition of a contraction, have been engaged in interactive songs about contractions and completed a range of activities within our literacy groups. You may like to ask your child about what an apostrophe stands for within a contraction.

Inquiry

We are very excited to be taking the Year One students to Puffing Billy on Monday 20 June for their first excursion. There is much excitement about travelling on board the old steam train. We ask you to check our Compass Event to access what the children are to bring, and what not to bring, on the day. We ask that all children make their way to their classrooms by 8.50am on Monday so that we can depart promptly for Belgrave by bus at 9am.

We wish you all a happy, healthy and safe term break and look forward to seeing the children in Term 3!
