Principal Report

Student Leadership Team

Last week I took great delight in presenting our newly established student leadership team at our first whole school assembly back on site together.

All students worked hard on their student leadership presentations which included preparation of a poster detailing their skills, strengths and interest in being a student leader, followed by an associated oral presentation. Following a whole school voting process, I proudly present our SLC students who have been selected for a range of positions of responsibility.

We are most grateful for these students who have taken on positions of responsibility with the goal to support Belmore School to be the best it can be.

Capital Works Program

The capital works program is now in full swing and as you will see in the photos, the demolition of classroom 4, visiting teachers' office, library, laundry and playground is nearing completion.  The classroom at the front of the school has been stripped bare, with demolition in this space being completed next Wednesday in the absence of our students.

I would particularly like to acknowledge and thank the staff and students in PLC3 - Emma, Jenny, Renee, Sebastian, Efe, Aadi, Annie, Natalie and Saskia who have been most impacted by the demolition works due to the proximity of their classroom and the unintended impact on their services.  Students and staff have demonstrated an amazing level of resilience and continued focus on their teaching and learning programs regardless of the disruptions encountered.

Defibrillator

With thanks to the generosity of our wonderful school community we have raised the funds required to purchase a new defibrillator.  The magnificent sum of $2500 in cash donations was added to the cake stall sales of $750, bringing the grand total raised to $3250.  Following the purchase of the new defibrillator and it's attachments, remaining funds will be put towards refurbishment of the existing defibrillator, which will be placed in the aquatics centre, and the ongoing upkeep of both machines.  All Belmore School staff are trained in the use of a defibrillator when we undertake our annual CPR training program.

Education Week

Education Week provided a wonderful opportunity for our students to learn about the history of Victorian public education alongside the history of Belmore School; shown here in 1962 when it was first opened, with placement on Stroud Street enabling its proximity to the Yooralla Hostel on the corner of Balwyn and Belmore Roads.

Students took great interest in learning about the milestones in education including:

1872 - Development of the Education Act to offer free, secular and compulsory education for children

1907 - First state funded kindergarten

1913 - Introduction of the school nursing program

1930 - Foundation of the State School's Relief program, which continues to support our students to this day

1971 - Funding of dedicated teachers to support migrant education

1981 - Introduction of computer technology in classrooms

1984 - Ministerial review of services for students with a disability

2001 - Introduction of Yalca, a precursor to the implementation of the first ever 10-year plan for Koorie education.

The opportunity to welcome our parents and carers back onto the school site to spend time with their children in their health and physical education programs was a memorable experience after two years remaining offsite and was greatly appreciated by our parents, students and staff.

A highlight of the week was the African Drumming incursion which was thoroughly enjoyed by us all.

Work Experience

Congratulations to our SLC7 student Charlie who is currently undertaking work experience at a local Vinnie's Op Shop.  Charlie has been sorting through the donations and pricing each of the items.  We thank Sue the store manager and the volunteers who assist in the store for supporting Charlie's first experience in the workforce.

Student Bus Transport

Just a reminder that parents and carers hold the responsibility to call Mee's Bus Lines on 9459 3000 by 7.00am to advise them that your child will not be using the bus service that morning.

PUPIL FREE DAYS

Many thanks for supporting our staff to develop their professional growth through arranging care of your child at home on the following dates:

Last Day of Term 2
