Around the School

Textiles
Year 9 Textiles learning the basics of fashion illustration for the Wool for School Design Competition. The students learned all about proportion of the female figure. A great effort for their first attempt.
Year 9 Child Studies Excursion
Year 9 Child Studies class were given a tour of the Maternity Ward of the Armidale Public Hospital by Midwife Melissa, who answered any questions the students had. They got to visit the Birthing Suites and the other facilities that the ward has on offer for expectant Mothers. Overall, the visit was a really worthwhile learning experience and links well with the previous Module studied as well as the upcoming one for this term, Caring for a Newborn.

Regenerative Agriculture Field Day
Agriculture students attended a Regenerative Agriculture field day on 10th April hosted by Armidale High, NEGS and SNELC.
Students were involved in sessions by leading soils ecologist Dr Maartin Stapper, A SoilKee soil renovator demo by Ranald Braund, Chilian Needle grass trials in progress at AHS and composting projects at NEGS.
Each session had the latest ideas in Sustainable Agriculture, and certainly stimulated the interest of students.
Managing Soil Ecology with Dr Maarten Stapper
Maarten will focus on management for healthy soils as the foundation of regenerative farming and the science that underpins it; explaining how healthy soils grow nutrient dense food plants that are resistant to diseases and pests.
Paddock to Plate to Paddock
Hear all about the trials of creating a circular economy at the New England Girls School. Join Ag Teacher, Mr Mark Fisher and his passionate students on a tour to discover how this system works on a boarding school scale.
Chilean Needle Grass Trials at AHS
Join with Armidale High School Ag Teacher, Mrs Rebecca Smith and her Ag students to explore their experience trialling different methods to control/eradicate the highly invasive Chilean Needle Grass.
Composting with a Difference
With the 'War on Waste' becoming more an issue than ever before NEGS are taking on the challenge of minimising the school's environmental footprint by utilising kitchen, riding school and garden waste to create a rich compost that feeds back into the Ag Farm and school gardens.
SoilKee Renovator Field Demonstration
Dorrigo farmer, Ranald Braund will demonstrate his SoilKee Renovator and the benefits it has on aerating the soil with minimal pasture disturbance. The SoilKee Renovator simultaneously buries organic matter, top-dresses the pasture with soil and drills seed into the rows.
Property Planning Field Day
Following the successful sustainable agriculture field day last term, Year 10/11 Agriculture travelled to Glen Innes Agricultural Research Station for the annual LLS Property Planning Field Day. The Research Station has a long history of leading agricultural improvement in New England since 1902.
Students attended 6 informative sessions on pastures, biodiversity, water quality, biosecurity, soils and aboriginal cultural heritage.
Using this information students will now prepare a whole farm property plan for the research station.
Students work across all KLA areas using their Science, English, mathematical, geographical, historical and research skills to develop an innovative set of plans for the research station going forward.
Year 12 Hospitality & Physics Excursion
Our Year 12 Hospo students really enjoyed their time at the Gold Coast, having lots of fun and learning plenty of skills.
These photos show them at Royal Pines Golf Resort, Dreamworld and Star Casino.
A huge thank you to Mrs Healey and Mr Fittler for accompanying the Hospo and Physics students.
Chess
Well done year 7 chess players Bradley Lidgard, Harrison Ross and Daniel Van Der Veer who competed in the Interschool Chess Challenge in Gunnedah today. They came 4th in the team event, whilst individually Harrison came 6th and Bradley came 5th.
Senior extravaganza
A letter from Sally Burey, Guyra Home Support
Services Co-ordinator.
Seniors Lunch was a great success and enjoyed by all. We had just over 300 seniors attending the day. The girls were a great help and all worked extremely hard from 8:45am until around 4.30pm. They assisted with making morning tea, serving, keeping the water and juice jugs and tea and coffee stations filled, serving and clearing lunches, food prep and washing up. Definitely a well-rounded experience of catering on a large scale.
Savannah Roberts also performed two solo dances which were really well received.
Students received a commendation for their assistance with the senior extravaganza in Guyra recently. Congratulations to Madi, Molly, Emma, Ruby, Bronte and Kirbee.
