Pentecost Sunday
Pentecost Sunday falls on May 20 this year. Pentecost at the Last Supper, Holy Thursday, Jesus promised a “helper” would come;
And I will pray the Father and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever— the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you. I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you. John 14:16–18
"This promise was fulfilled when the Apostles and disciples, in Jerusalem for the Jewish feast of Pentecost, were given purpose and courage by the Holy Spirit. When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them". Acts 2:1– 4
Pentecost Sunday occurs 10 days after the Ascension. It is considered the birthday of the Church.
Bishop Kennedy turns 50!
Happy Birthday Bishop Kennedy. The Bishop will celebrate Mass on Sunday at 10.00am. Parishioners please join him for a cup of tea and a piece of cake after mass to help him celebrate.
ANZAC DAY SERVICE
Thank you to our own Mr (Major) May and our cadets who organised a very memorable ANZAC Day service for the college. Mr May gave a moving speech about the meaning of ANZAC. Major May also was able to access records that gave the story and provided pictures of some of own ex students who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country. It was also really wonderful to see so many O'Connor students march and attend their own community ANZAC Day services.
La Sallian Week
La Sallian Week (Leadership Days, Reflection Days and Youth Gathering)
At the time of writing year 8 are off to the Cathedral Precinct for a reflection day with the La Sallian Youth Team from Sydney. Year 7 had a very successful reflection day focussing on the concept of community. Prior to this our own Year 11 students who were appointed La Sallian Youth Leaders (LYLs) had a Christian leadership day. During this day they were prepared to help with the year 7 and 8 retreats where they facilitated small group discussion and acted as a friend and mentor for our year 7's and 8's. On top of this, a wonderful Lasallian Youth meeting for current and ex students was held at O'Connor. At this gathering the concept of Lasallians without limits was introduced. Tom Hawthorne gave a stirring speech to support this talking about his experience as a Lasallian volunteer at Balgo Hills in remote Western Australia. Many thanks to Olivia Moore and Isaac Selvey for facilitating this.
