TOUCH TYPING WITH TYPING.COM

It’s been a wonderful start to the year as we welcome the new Year 7s to the ICT Department at McKinnon. As we dive into the Year 7 ICT course, the students have begun learning how to type using https://www.typing.com/. After a few lessons working on their typing skills, students’ accuracy and words per minute (WPM) have improved.

Typing.com provides online gamified lessons, teaching students how to type and eventually touch type. Without relying on their sense of sight, students will eventually navigate their way around the keyboard through the use of muscle memory. Touch typing makes you faster and your accuracy better. This will allow students to complete their tasks on the computer quicker and also frees up their cognitive energy. Students will focus on completing the task at hand, rather than trying to find keys in front of them.

If you are interested in improving your own touch typing skills, head on down to https://www.typing.com/

NEW SUBJECT OFFERING IN 2021: INTRODUCTION TO ENGINEERING

This year the ICT Department introduces a new topic to the Year 10 Curriculum: Introduction to Engineering. This half-year elective was developed due to the strong uptake in Robotics in Year 9 and Physics in Year 10.

This new subject will be using some of the brand new resources at the school such as the 3D printers and Arduino microcontrollers. We look forward to sharing some of the innovative projects that come out of this class!
