Celebrating Science Week

MaryAnn Leembruggen, Magnolia Group Teacher & ELSA Coordinator

This week is Science Week and in the ELC we are celebrating!

Having been introduced to the exciting ELSA program earlier in the year, our Magnolia and Magenta 4-year-old children are always keen and curious to learn more about science.

Linking seamlessly with our inquiry–based learning program, science promotes the importance of asking questions and promotes a sense of wonder as inquiry leads to new understandings of the world.

Our ELSA program stands for Early Learning STEM Australia. It offers children the fun of learning through play-based experiences and allows them to apply their new knowledge using a digital learning program.

Inspiring children to explore the natural world, this program instills valuable STEM practices in our early learners, such as curiosity, problem-solving and observation, along with many other important ideas, methods and values.

Early learners investigate patterns

Our ELSA investigations into patterns and relationships supported the children to think more widely about possibilities using a variety of loose parts, natural materials and blocks and construction.

Conducting their own experiments, the children followed directions and asked questions like, 'I wonder what will happen if ...?', and predicted what might happen next. This was so popular that we celebrated with 'A Pattern Day' where everyone’s clothes had patterns!
