SIS Cross Country

On Tuesday 28 May,  68 students braved the very cold weather conditions to participate in the SIS Cross Country competition at Baxter Park. It was great to see many students representing the college and giving the 3km or 4km run a go. Many students went above and beyond a ran in year levels higher than them, which shows great enthusiasm and courage to do so. Overall, St John’s came fourth on the day which was a great effort. Our Sports Captain Pearlin Augustin was a standout coming third in her U21 Female race. Despite the rain and wind throughout the day, it seemed like all St John's runners were happy to be there as a team.

A big thank you to the staff who also helped make the day run smoothly Mr Paul Wintle, Ms Jo Davies, Ms Ash Holly, Ms Catherine Bortolus, Mr Mario Laing.

HPE Fitness Excursion

On Wednesday May 29 Mr Laing and Mr Wintle’s HPE class visited the Freeway Sports and Health Centre in Dandenong for a session of Boxing and a Spin class. The students participated in both activities and really enjoyed the experience. At St John's, we believe in giving the Year 10 students an experience of the types of recreational and sport activities that are available to the public in and around the area of Dandenong. This purpose links up with the content being taught in VCE Health and Human development and Physical Education and because we want students to develop a love for physical activity and even find an area that they could pursue further. We know from the research that young people who belong to sporting clubs have a much better chance at doing well in other areas of life because of the support they experience being part of a group that is health focused. On our next excursions in term 3 we will do a Bike Education unit and ride along the Dandenong creek trail for a couple of the sessions.
