Year 10 History Exhibition

In the Year 10 final History projects, students investigate a theme of personal interest through the historical lens of World War Two and the Civil Rights Movement (USA and AUS). Through the design of a multimedia exhibit, students unpack and critique key issues that produce or resolve global conflict using World War Two or the Civil Rights movements as the basis of their inquiry.

Year 11 Social

The Year 11 Social was held at St Mary's Primary School auditorium on Tuesday 21st May. The theme for this year’s Social was Masquerade.

This was a fantastic opportunity for students to come together and socialise and dance the night away. A committee of students was formed to help organise the event. This involved publicity, setting up of venue, and cleaning up. A special thanks to the following students : Lara Agon, Athena Gear, Natarsha Acton, Takeshi Liyanage, Aker Mawith, Caitlin Jones, Shanaika Kasturinghe, Pallavi Kanwar, Josh D’Olivera Nabel Thuok and Teresa Cataldo.

Year 12 Retreat

The Year 12 retreat was an enlightening experience and a highlight to our Year 12 journey. It was through our retreat that we are able to create closer bonds to all the people in our year level and learn more about each other's lives which would not have been possible in a school environment. Across the three days, we completed 10 reflection activities which enabled us to not only share our stories, but to get an understanding of our futures. These activities got us to also spend time thinking about ourselves and provided us with the opportunity to reflect on our relationship with those around us. The instructors on the camp were extremely helpful in guiding us through some artistic and athletic games, and also led us through prayer. Everyone had a chance to write affirmations for their peers. It was refreshing to see everyone so positive and sharing opinions. Retreat was a great experience that I'll always remember. We strongly recommend the future year 12's to give retreat a chance and put in 110% effort into the experience- as it was truly awesome!

Thank you to all the teachers and staff at Yellingbo and Stringybark, and those part of De La Salle who organised, planned and ran the event.

Year 12 Students

Australian Catholic Youth Festival

On 8-10th of December this year, young people from all over Australia will be gathering in Perth for the Australian Catholic Youth Festival.  Following is a link to the website where you can learn more about the Festival.  https://youthfestival.catholic.org.au/

We are inviting 20 young people to attend the Festival in Perth.  If this is something you would like to be involved with please email me and indicate your interest.  The School and Catholic Education Office will cover ¾ of the registration price which includes accommodation, air fares, some meals etc.  Therefore, you would need to commit to paying the last quarter of the cost which is approx. $420.00.  We are happy to organise payment plans if the cost becomes an issue.

This may be an ideal event for students who are keen to undertake leadership positions in the College in the next couple of years.  I look forward to hearing from any interested students.

I-CAN Network

This year,  the College has proudly supported the I CAN Network program. Many of our students have attended the I CAN NETWORK sessions on Friday mornings.

The I CAN NETWORK is the initiative of its founder, Mr Chris Varney, who has been recently been nominated for an Australian of the Year award.

All sessions are conducted by qualified and experienced mentors. The College I CAN program began in August 2018 and we have been pleased to continue our involvement with the Network during 2019.

The I CAN NETWORK supports our students to develop their leadership qualities, to come together to meet other students and involve themselves in fun activities, conversations and to get to know others.

Last year our students proudly represented the College at the I CAN AWETISM EXPO, and we hope to continue this experience when it occurs later this year.

Our students presented and/or exhibited information relating to their area of interest. This included music, anime, history, trains and Yu-Gi-Oh!

The I CAN program is another avenue for our students from Years 7-11 to further develop their confidence and sense of wellbeing.

The I CAN Program is now in its 5th Year and is delivered to groups of students on the Spectrum across primary and secondary schools, universities, TAFEs and workplaces.

The St. John’s College leadership has provided us with the opportunity to bring this program to our students, continuing to support and develop the AWE in our AWESOME students and rethinking Autism from I CAN’T to I CAN.

Culinary Cooking Challenge 2019

Each year the Australian Culinary Federation (ACF) conducts a cooking competition for secondary school students in each Australian state.

The aim of this competition is to give students an insight into the hospitality industry and to identify and encourage students who demonstrate a talent and a passion for cooking.  This competition also opens the doors for competitors for future training and employment.

There will be only one overall winning team who will represent Victoria in the National Secondary Schools Culinary Challenge.

Congratulations to all the schools who participated and for our very own Graduate's restaurant holding such a marvellous event for families, students and chef's to enjoy!
