SENIOR SCHOOL

Year 11 History Excursion

On Friday, 20 July, the Year 11 20th Century History class went on an all-day excursion to the Shrine of Remembrance and the Jewish Holocaust Centre. The focus of this unit is conflict and change, with students being asked to look at the impact of decisions on individuals, groups and countries. We were so lucky to be able to meet a Holocaust survivor as we will be the last generation who will get the privilege of speaking with them. The responsibility is now on us to share their stories and make sure that we’re ambassadors for inclusion.

Here are some class reflections on their experiences at the shrine:

“When we went to the Shrine of Remembrance we looked through the Australian engagements during World War I and World War II. I learnt that my great grandad was in service and found his name at the Shrine.”

Noah E. 11A

“At the Shrine of Remembrance, we saw the eternal flame and the war exhibit, which showcased all the wars that Australia has been involved in. I learnt a lot about the Japanese bombing of Darwin, the atomic bomb and the war in Afghanistan. It was interesting to see all the different uniforms that Australians wore to war, I had no idea there were so many! I liked learning about the war physically and socially.”

Nik G. 11D

Here are some class reflections on their experiences at the Holocaust centre:

“It was great to visit the Holocaust museum and listen to someone talk. Having them guide us around the museum was very meaningful.”  Ashley T. 11J

“We sat in a room and watched an introductory video with a question and answer with the educator. We also met a survivor of the Holocaust and walked through the museum exhibition. I learnt how many Jewish people survived the war and how hard life actually was for them.”

 Alanna D. 11J

“I learnt how dehumanised many victims of war were. The Jewish population under Nazi Germany rule were perhaps the most well-documented victims of such atrocities. During the excursion, we met a Jewish survivor from a country occupied by Nazi Germany, Czechoslovakia, and it helped me learn how the civilian population were impacted by the various conflicts.”

Owen S. 11B

A special thank you to Mr Dunn who was instrumental in the organisation of the trip and who drove us for the day.
