VCE Italian Presenter: Archimede Fusillo

Archie Fusillo presented his highly acclaimed presentation to VCE Italian students including; the benefits of studying a second language and motivation of maintaining interest in a second language based on his experiences of success of his personal life and career as a writer with bilingual skills. Adding to the Year 12 Study Design topic of Italian Mass Migration to Australia Post World War 2, students were mesmerised by his story and research of the untold stories of Italian immigrants, their times of hardship and lack of sense of belonging. These stories changed many of our students’ preconceived ideas about Italian migration and its lingering impact on Australia today.

STUDENT REFLECTIONS

Archie Fusillo’s presentation provided us with a new insight into the life of an Italian immigrant. His stories about the non-successful immigrants were both emotional yet inspiring. Something new that we found through his presentation was that the harsh struggles did not stop after 10 years, rather that they and their families were still affected for far longer than we previously presumed.

Archie taught me about immigration and also how much I should value being bilingual because it opens up so many doors and allows for a whole new understanding of the world.

I did not know very much, but I related to the presentation because my grandparents migrated to Australia in the 1950’s from Italy.

I don’t have any Italian family however, there has been immigration from Lithuania. I found it interesting hearing about the Italian immigrants talking about their struggles with learning English, earning money and gaining acceptance in Australia as it would have been quite similar to my parents.

2019 Proposed Italian Language & Arts Cultural Tour

We are currently working on an exciting itinerary and Doncaster Secondary College is pleased to announce a proposed tour to Italy for our students in 2019. At this stage we are seeking expressions of interest from families with students who are studying Italian and/or The Arts in Years 10, 11 and 12 in 2019 and who intend to pursue their study of these subjects into VCE.

We envisage the tour will take place in March 2019 for approximately 24 days. Students will also be attending classes in Milano at our sister school. Departure is proposed for around March and returning during the Term One holidays of 2019. This tour will not affect any exams.

Although it is too soon to provide exact dates and accurate costing for the tour, it may be helpful to note that previous tours have been approximately $6600.00 for a tour which covers: airfares, taxes, private coach for touring, entrance fees, tours, most transport expenses, all accommodation with private facilities and some meals. It is anticipated that students will require a further $900.00(approximately) to pay for other meals and local transport. Personal spending money is not included.

It is anticipated that a non-refundable payment of $1500.00 would be required to be paid to the college by the middle of August. This cost includes a school sourced insurance premium. Please note that this insurance does not cover any pre-existing conditions.

Students who are interested in attending the 2019 tour of Italy must complete the expression of interest form via the following link:
