Delahey Campus Principal Message

Hello Everyone,

Welcome to Term 3, arguable one of the busiest of the year especially for Year 12 students.

The start of the term saw English come into focus with the Oral SACs, which were cross marked by college English teachers, even from the junior campuses.  These were followed by the trip to ACMI where the students were treated to a cinema experience of the film that is a text as well as a stimulating lecture from ACMI staff.

The Year 12 VCAL projects are all completed in readiness for the final presentations in the Study Centre on Friday August 16th. Christmas in July was a great success with ARCARE residents waxing lyrical about the event.  The first trivia night our VCAL students have run went off superbly with amazing community support in terms of prizes.  The crowd was made up of a range of staff from the college and Western Health – the latter beating all the teachers to take out first prize!  Members of one of our other community partners, CHASE, also made up a table and took out the wooden spoon.

Another strand in our transition to the senior campus process is the family information night for current year 10 students.  This ran in week two of this term and was very well attended.  The Expo, set up by teachers, was one of the best ever and involved an unprecedented number of students making themselves available to speak to prospective students and families.  The presentation itself was also enhanced by two of our year 12 students addressing the crowd about their VCE and VCAL experiences.  Many thanks to Cigdem Ismael and Aiden Romijn for stepping up on this occasion.

All Delahey students undertook a wellbeing survey early in the term, which will form a baseline against which we will measure the impact of future endeavours to enhance student wellbeing.  Another aspect of promoting wellbeing is the introduction of Team Assemblies where individual students are commended for their efforts in sporting teams, school events and the like.  Students who have gone above and beyond in terms of showing respect, responsibility and kindness were recognised in our first campus assembly of the term, receiving RRR Awards.  This follows our assembly to present achievement awards to our Year 11 student in the last week of Term 2.

Mention needs to be made of the college production of ‘Grease’, which entertained students and community members alike.  It is a wonderful opportunity for students from all campuses to come together and there was a wide range of year levels involved.  There was some impressive acting and singing but what stood out for me was the exuberance and enthusiasm from all cast members.  Another thing to celebrate at Copperfield productions is the live music that our talented students provide.  Many thanks to the many staff who oversaw this undertaking.

Over the term holidays Mary Chiodo and I attended a teaching expo at the University of Melbourne with the aim of promoting state education as well as Copperfield College.  We are continuing this process by running an orientation day for Melbourne Graduate School of Education graduates in the next two weeks.

In Literacy news, our Year 7 and 8 English teachers participated in a workshop last week, part of which involved teachers explaining how they help students focus on their reading and understanding of comprehension strategies.  To say these presentations were inspiring is no exaggeration.

The campus welcomed an Acting Campus Principal, Snezana Veljonovski last week.  Amanda Mullins was asked to take on an Acting Principal role at Werribee Secondary College at very short notice in the last week of Term 2.  When she visited classes to explain that she was about to leave us (even if temporarily) she was overcome by positive and affirming messages from staff and students alike.  We wish her well in her new role but she is greatly missed.

Until next time,

Ms Pip Griffiths and Ms Snezana Veljanovski
