Assistant Principal's Page

Good to be Back.

Having spent last term with the Department of Education working in the Literacy and Numeracy Strategy, I am glad to be back.

It was a wonderful experience being involved in the development of educational policy for the whole state, providing a school’s perspective on many of the topics being discussed and even featuring in an Education Department promotional video.

I learned a great many things and had some great experiences. However, what the Department did lack was the day-to-day dealing with students, the most important part of education.

I would like to thank Claire for looking after things in my absence and I look forward to working with her in Judy’s absence this term.

College Policies

Three College policies were ratified by College Council last term:

  • Homework Policy
  • Work Submission Policy
  • International Student Homestay Policy

These policies can be viewed on the College website (https://www.whsc.vic.edu.au/)

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

A reminder to all Year 7 families of the excursion to the musical, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory at Her Majesty’s Theatre on November 6.

Thanks to all those who have purchased their tickets. There is a strictly limited number and they are selling fast. Details can be found on Compass.

Uniform

Thank you to all the students who began Term 3 in full school uniform. It is great to see students proudly wearing WHSC colours and representing our College in a respectful way. Thank you for the parent support in this matter as we try to encourage our students to present themselves in an appropriate manner in keeping with the College uniform policy. Please also be mindful of correct fitting uniform as many of our students experience growth spurts which impact on the length and fit of uniform items. Students who fail to wear correct school uniform will face graduated consequences in line with the uniform policy. Please refer to the college website for a copy of the uniform policy.

Year 12 Parent/Student/Teacher Afternoon Tea

Thank you to all the parents who attended the Year 12 Afternoon Tea session on Tuesday 16th July. The parents and students greatly benefitted from talking to Year 12 teachers; they received final strategies and study tips to help them achieve their best results in the upcoming VCE SACs and Exams. If you were unable to attend, please contact the subject teachers via Compass, email or phone. It takes a community to raise a child. During the final stages of Year 12, it takes a community to support the child through study and a WHOLE other community to comfort the parents through the terror, tears and late nights of anxiety. Stock your cupboards with chocolates and special treats because someone in the household will need it!

English Road Trip

On the first day of term the English Domain took a road trip to various schools and participate in professional learning. We were among the privileged few who received the latest curriculum documentation from the Department. We also had the opportunity to tour schools and investigate whole school reading programs. WHSC has already implemented a Class Reader’s Notebook program in Year 7 – 10 English classes, but want to extend this idea and encourage reading in all classes. Our aim is to have our students reading at least 20 minutes per day. See the image for relevant reasons why.
