CELEBRATION OF DUKE OF ED IN AUSTRALIA

The Duke of Edinburgh Award celebrated its 60th Anniversary in Australia in style by hosting an evening event in the Yarra Room at the Melbourne Town Hall on Wednesday 13 November.

In the 60 years the Duke of Ed has operated in Australia, volunteers supporting the Award have contributed over one million hours, supporting over 180,000 Victorian youth. Currently there are over 1000 Award Leaders as well as 15,000 Assessors and other volunteers supporting the Award in Victoria. McKinnon Secondary College has been an Award Centre for over 40 years and was formally awarded with a Certificate of Recognition on the night, presented by The Right Honourable The Lord Mayor of Melbourne, Sally Capp.

This year, McKinnon SC has expanded its Duke of Ed program to a Semester based elective for Year 9 students, which has seen 127 participants begin their Bronze Award, with 12 participants completing their Award in the same year and 2 participants moving on to complete their Silver Award. With their Bronze Award under their belt, participants increase their employment prospects in both casual and full time employment as well as opening doors into tertiary education.

The Award is about individual challenge, variety of activity, duration, teamwork and recognition. As every individual is different, each participant is encouraged to look at themselves, their interests, abilities and ambitions, then set themselves challenges in four different sections of the Award (Voluntary Service, Skill, Physical Recreation and Adventurous Journey). The Award currently assists over 40,000 young people each year to find their purpose, passion and place in a global world, equipping them for work and life. McKinnon SC is proud to be officially recognised as a long serving Award Centre of the Duke of Edinburgh Award.

GREAT VICTORIAN BIKE RIDE

On Sunday 24 November we farewelled our Years 8, 9 and 10 students as they left for their two-week adventure on the Great Victorian Bike Ride. Many enduring friendships have been forged on the Great Vic Bike Ride over the years. We wish everyone a safe ride.

I would like to thank and acknowledge Phil DeSalvo and his team – Paul King, Liam Adlington, Nick Foot, Tiffany Zikou, David Machin, Melissa Brush, Carole Hooper, Daniel Farthing, Jack Gromer, Rachel Walker, Willem Voorham, Brett Howe and Timothy Blackwood - for all they have done to avail students to this wonderful opportunity.

FRENCH EXCHANGE

The French Exchange leaves today with 15 students and I wish Ms Ludmila Antal and Ms Annette Reid the very best for a very successful trip. I look forward to hearing about the adventure on their return.

FIT-WISE PROGRAM

The FIT-WISE (Faculty of Information Technology-Women in STEM and Entrepreneurship) program run by Monash University worked with teams of Year 10 girls working to build their own innovative business ideas. Following on from the overall program win by one McKinnon team, the second McKinnon team "Get Real" has achieved first prize in the final WISE Video submission competition.
