OSHC News

Our Fortnight in Review

We have had another huge fortnight at OSHC! Our junior years have loved the drawing table - such a simple, quite experience to participate in after a big day at school! Billie made Bob (her bear) a bow tie whilst Milla C enjoyed some keyboard practice. April (Prep) enjoyed hanging out with some of our older students and Imogen demonstrated her craft skills with her ‘no littering’ poster.

Speeches

Friday was the last day of our student speeches for our ‘2019 OSHC Elections’. We are so proud of all the students who got up in front of a big group of students, parents and educators and spoke - it’s not easy speaking in front of all those people!!

It was great to see so much creativity and thought go into the speeches. Georgia W cooked brownies and handed them out at pick-up time to show off her skills for ‘Head Chef’, Jade and Abbie did a speech using lots of props and Natasha read a book for ‘Prep Team Leader’. Voting commenced this week and we look forward to announcing the successful leaders next week.

Wednesday Honeys

At OSHC we love to let students take ownership of their program. This year a number of our senior students have taken on the role of cooking and serving breakfast for all OSHC students. These students have developed a company name the ‘Wednesday Honeys’ and have made menus, developed ‘specials’ and even made prizes for students with the best manners.

Whilst the students are having an absolute ball running this ‘company’, there are so many skills and understandings that the students are learning including problem solving skills, communication skills, working as part of a team, working under pressure and so on. Furthermore, students (under direct supervision of our Educators) are learning about diversity, allergies and the importance of checking all ingredients to ensure students with dietary restrictions are served the correct foods.

Find out a little bit more about the ‘Wednesday Honeys’ below!

Hi, I’m Sienna one of the ‘Wednesday Honeys’. The ‘Wednesday Honeys’ are Libby, Sienna, (as you already know) Sofia and Tash (Product Designer). We organise and serve breakfast on Tuesday, Wednesday and sometimes Thursday mornings.

The ‘Wednesday Honeys’ are a group of girls with abilities that are much needed when serving breakfast for hungry children that are in much need for a beautiful filling meal! We have raffles to get 2 instead of 1 special and pack up passes so you can skip the insanely boring end of session pack ups (so far we have had Zac C win the prize).

When it’s your birthday you get the ‘mega daddy’s’ of the specials! And don’t forget we have a customer of the week, if you have great manners! So far we have had Abigail P and Georgia B - congratulations! We hope to see you in the mornings and order lots of food especially our famous Cheesy Squeezies!

We are a 'Be You' Learning Community

A Be You Learning Community is a school or early learning service which has committed to a whole learning community approach to mental health and wellbeing. It has active support from leadership, with an Action Team Leader and team ready to drive change and take action.

As a Be You Learning Community, we are making a strong statement to the wider community about our commitment to promoting mental health and wellbeing.

Quality Improvement Plan

This fortnight we are looking at Quality Area 3 of the National Quality Standards, ‘The Physical Environment’, and are wanting to get your feedback on the way our environment is designed, equipped and organised.

  • Is it welcoming and inviting?
  • Do your children ever say we wish OSHC had …?
  • How can we improve the set up?

We would LOVE to hear your thoughts!!

Important Reminder

It is really important that you let us know prior to the session if your child will not be attending after school care. Unfortunately we spend a lot of time chasing up absences after school and this is taking away time from other activities.

You can advise us of an absence by calling 0484 916 457 or emailing oshc@beaumarisnorthps.vic.edu.au.

Quote of the Fortnight

“The best teachers are those who show you where to look, but don’t tell you what to see” – Alexandra K. Trenfor.

Feedback

As always, we welcome feedback about any aspect of the program. Please feel free to come in and have a chat with Kelly, Tamara or Amanda, send us an email or leave a note in the Feedback box on the sign-in table.

We welcome your input!
