Excursion to Werribee Zoo

I’m sure when you hear it’s Valentine's Day you don’t imagine an hour bus ride to the Werribee Zoo, or collecting scats (as the zoo calls it) in grassland, but that’s exactly how Ms Bendall’s Year 12 Environmental Science class spent this romantic day.

We spent the week prior learning about the state of the Eastern Barred Bandicoot (who are extinct in the wild) and despite the bandicoot being at the vet when we got to Werribee we were able to sample a potential enclosure for him using quadrats and determine that it was unfit. The highlights of the day included eating lunch with the meerkats and then travelling through the African safari section of the zoo where we saw multiple animals on the savannah and in the water.

Ms Bendall and Ms Rieniets were on hand to link everything we saw back to our studies in the classroom on the importance of biodiversity and the impacts of species extinction as well as providing us with an incredibly worthwhile and entertaining excursion.
