Student Leadership

"Coming together is a beginning. Keeping together is progress. Working together is success."

Henry Ford

The Junior School Leadership team should be determined within the next week  with the Year 7 students electing their Class Captains and SRC representatives while on camp.

This year for the first time, our Peer Support Leaders (Year 10) will be attending one day of each Year 7 camp to work more closely with students and to lead activities.

Year 8 Class Captains and SRC representatives will be finalised during Personal Learning classes.

All student leaders have the opportunity to attend various Leadership Conferences to learn and further develop the necessary skills to be a strong leader. Twenty-one senior students will be attending the GRIP conference in March with a group from the Middle and Junior School teams and SRC to attend the VIC SRC Student Voice workshop on 25 March.

Introducing the Middle School Captains

Lily West: Middle School Captain

My name is Lily West and I am one of the 2019 Middle School Captains. Before coming to MGSC I attended Aspendale Gardens Primary School. When I started Year 7 I knew that leadership was something I was wanting to do. Over my past three years here I have been lucky enough to receive the roles of SRC representative, Class Captain and Middle School Leader in 2018. As I have previously been a part of the Middle School leadership team, I knew that Middle School Captain was a role that I wanted to pursue. Through the leadership roles I have held at MGSC and outside of school, I have been fortunate enough to partake in many life-changing experiences that I will forever remember and be grateful for. This year I hope to bring the Middle School together and implement plans and programs suggested by the students here at MGSC, I also hope that my peers feel comfortable to come and express their ideas and thoughts to me so that we can improve the school and make a difference that will be remembered for years to come!

Olivia Gryszan: Middle School Captain

Hi I’m Olivia Gryszan and I’m one of your 2019 Middle School Captains. Out of school, I volunteer and help team manage at Mordialloc Life Saving Club. I also play and umpire netball. I have been in leadership positions in the past and those roles have taught me that hard work pays off and that many hands make light work. This year, as one of your captains, I am hoping to share my thoughts and the thoughts of the middle school cohort, with the school’s leadership team.

This year I wanted to have more involvement in the school and get to know a whole new group of people so, I decided to sign up for the role of Middle School Captain. Last year I was a Visual Arts Domain Leader and really enjoyed having meetings and working with the others members in that team.

This year I would like to implement more ways for students to voice their opinions comfortably and happily so that they cannot say they don’t have anywhere to share their thoughts. There is only so much we can do as leaders, so why not get others on board? I love working with fellow students so feel free to come and talk to me anytime. I am super thrilled to have been appointed to this role and I will try my hardest to fulfill all tasks in 2019.

Student Representative Council

We are already half way through Term 1 but that means exciting things are well underway.

The SRC has decided to support a different not-for-profit charity each term.  They will be raising funds and raising awareness of each cause within our school community.

Term 1 will be dedicated to supporting Geri Sumpter (mother of a MGSC student and School Council member) who is raising money for the Royal Flying Doctors Service (RFDS) by participating at the Moomba Birdman Rally.

Did you know that the RFDS conducted 16,209 Nurse, GP and Dental clinics across Australia last year so image the help that as a community we could provide to the RFDS and better yet the people who live in rural or remote areas that rely on the service.

The SRC is showing their support by raising funds through a Free Dress Day on Tuesday 5 March.

MGSC has a student population that well exceeds 1000 students, which means the potential to raise over $1000. If we reach this amount the Royal Flying Doctors Service will bring a simulator to the school and for students to try, which is a fantastic opportunity.

Please assist the SRC and the RFDS in reminding your daughter and having a conversation that maybe giving up one coffee or hot chocolate a year and donating one dollar each free dress day we can help support those that a little can go a long way as well as for donating one lucky student will win a movie voucher.
