YARRA CITY wants to know about how your family gets active

How do you and your family move?

How do you and your family stay active? Yarra City Council needs your ideas to help us make Yarra a healthier, more active city.

When we talk about being active, we’re talking about getting your body moving in any way that you like. It can be different for everyone. If you enjoy the way that you are being active, then you will make time for it - no matter what!

It's not just about playing sport. It could be dancing to a YouTube video in your loungeroom, walking to the shops or home from school, playing with kids at the park, kicking the footy with friends or doing gardening.

How can you help?

We want to hear from you about how you and your children move, and what would help you be more active.  We also want to hear from your kids! We would love to know their favourite activities and what they want to do more.

You can help us understand your family’s needs by sharing your ideas before Friday 17th December 2021. The website is yoursayyarra.com.au/yarramoves/families

Indigenous Biodiversity Garden Project

This year Collingwood College received a grant from Junior Landcare to create an indigenous biodiversity garden that could be used as a learning space in science and humanities. Covid has slowed the momentum this year however has allowed us to prepare the space.

To prepare, we audited the current invertebrate population and participated in the pollination audit. We checked out our May creepy crawlies.

Over activities week we have been delighted to work with Jakobi from the Royal Botanical Gardens to learn about the cultural significance of our indigenous plants and animals.

Students in Year 7 and 9 suppressed weeds with cardboard, some stomping and pulling. The cardboard will also add carbon back into the soil. They also laid straw, to add nitrogen. And finally mulch. A huge effort!

This project has pulled together many parts of our school and broader community.

We would like to thank Sarah McCormack for her advise regarding soil preparation this year, Olga our arts specialist for getting sponsorship for paneling to create a Kulin season mural, and Rosie and our incredible Year 9 artists that have worked so hard over the last two weeks to create the design for the mural in an artist workshop. The mural will be painted in the last week of school and displayed in the indigenous garden.

Thanks also to Jeremy for helping pick up mulch from CEREs, to Angela from the Merri Creek Management committee that shared her experience of garden creation with the Year 7s.

The hope is next year the Year 7s as part of their ecosystem unit in science will be designing and planting out the garden, increasing our indigenous biodiversity with more habitats for insects and birds and creating an additional learning space for students.

Kindness is Always in Style

Hello everyone, our focus this month is Kindness and to celebrate there is a calendar for December with 31 challenges for you to undertake. Being kind to others takes the focus off ourselves and can provide respite from negative thoughts and feelings. It also benefits someone else and can make them feel supported and valued.

On Monday 6th December our Year 7 and 8 students did a lesson on Wellbeing and Kindness. One of the activities was to identify a kind act someone had done for them and an act of kindness they had done for someone else. There were less Year 8s at school so there are less responses from them.

Here are a few ideas to get you started in your own Kindness actions:

  • Be on time.
  • Call your mom or dad just to say I love you.
  • Send a message to a friend, letting them know you appreciate them.
  • Forgive someone who has wronged you.
  • Do chores for a family member who could use some extra free time.
  • Give a friend a book you think they would like.
  • Write a letter of encouragement to a child you know is having a hard time.
  • Send a friend a helpful or inspiring article that made you think of them.
  • Write a sweet, encouraging note and put it in your child’s lunch box or under their pillow.
  • Give an unexpected compliment.
  • Let someone cut in front of you in line.
  • Slow down so someone can merge in front of you in traffic.
  • Give someone your seat on a crowded bus or subway.
  • Buy a warm meal for someone in need.
  • Help someone struggling to carry their grocery bags.
  • Stop to assist someone who looks lost.
  • Donate flowers to a nursing home.
  • Pick up a piece of litter on the street and throw it out.
  • Pass along a compliment to a service worker’s boss.
  • Pay for the meal of the people at the next table. (Leave before they realize what you’ve done.)
  • Talk to a stranger at a party who looks like they don’t know anyone.
  • Smile at someone who looks sad.

Don’t forget yourself! Schedule a pedicure or massage, spend a few hours reading a great book or make time for another activity you love. Being kind to yourself will give you the energy and strength to be kind to others!

We hope you and your family have a happy and safe holiday season and look forward to working with you in 2022.
