Communication with Thornbury Primary School and the Principal

TPS is a dynamic school environment with many things to communicate with our community, staff and students.  We use the Compass Calendar and Compass posts to keep everyone updated on upcoming events and activities.  We also thank our Class Carers who support the teacher to be a link between the school and families.

If you have any questions or concerns that are not addressed through these general communications we invite you to contact our administration team or myself to have further discussions.  Please email Thornbury.ps@education.vic.gov.au or call the school number.  If I am unavailable during the day you reach out please ask the office to schedule a meeting or phone call reply.

I welcome community feedback and input regarding creating the best learning environment for our students.

Mental Health in Primary Schools Pilot Program

This year we are fortunate to be included in the Mental Health in Primary Schools Pilot program.   This is a $90 000 staffing grant to allow Anna Chetwynd to learn about and train our staff in the support and monitoring of our students wellbeing and mental health.  As this is a pilot program we are learning through training modules the scope of the program and adapting the learning to our student engagement and wellbeing strategies we already have in place.

We are committed to ensuring that all students feel safe and ready to learn across our school.

Curriculum Day - Berry Street Education Model

Last Friday our entire staff had the incredible opportunity to begin our learning of The Berry Street Education Model.   This provides our school with the training, curriculum and strategies to engage all students. The model incorporates 5 Key Focus areas:

  • Body: Building students’ capacity by increasing physical regulation of the stress response, de-escalation and focus.
  • Relationship: Nurturing on-task learning through relational classroom management strategies.
  • Stamina: Creating a culture of academic persistence by nurturing resilience, emotional intelligence and a growth mindset.
  • Engagement: Motivating students with strategies that increase their willingness to learn.
  • Character: Harnessing a values and character strengths approach to instil students’ self-knowledge for future pathways.
