HSIE

Our junior HSIE classes have been continuing their studies in Geography. Here is just a snippet of what’s been happening in our classrooms.

Students in 7 TED-HSIE studied a Geography unit called 'Landscapes and Landforms'. Part of this unit was the Mystery Bag Challenge. Students formed groups and were given the task of designing a 3 dimensional sculpture of a landscape. They only had the contents of their Mystery Bag to use and were given 25 minutes to complete the challenge. Students and members of the Leadership team then went around to each class voting for their favourite sculpture. Everyone was most impressed with the super creative sculptures that were made in such a short timeframe.

Some examples of students work are:

Year 8 students are currently studying the topic “Water in the World”. Students started the unit by learning about the water cycle. One activity saw students creating a song that explained the processes involved in the cycle.

Students in Year 10 Geography have been investigating the benefits of gratitude as part of the “Human Wellbeing’ unit this term. The students were asked to reflect on those for whom they are grateful, but may have never expressed their thanks, within the MDCC community. The Gratitude Window in our Resource Centre provided an opportunity for the Year 10s to reach out to a variety of members within the Mater Dei community to not only demonstrate their appreciation, but to also reflect on the good things that are happening in their lives.

Year 11 students have now commenced their HSC courses and are preparing for their first HSC Assessment Tasks in the coming weeks. Many of these tasks not only assess student learning outcomes but are a way of practicing the skills required for the HSC exams. Students are encouraged to use their time wisely in the lead up to these tasks and access the many avenues of support available to them at the College including tutorials, their class teachers and the Coaching Program.

We would also like to take this opportunity to wish all of our Year 12 Ancient and Modern History, Society and Culture, Geography, Business and Legal Studies students all the best for their upcoming HSC exams and hope all their effort and hard work is rewarded by achieving their best possible results.
