Intermediate boys soccer

The Intermediate Boys Soccer team lead by star captain Mame Salah have progressed to the 2018 State Finals, after impressive performances in this year’s Keilor Division and Western Metro Finals.

After disposing of soccer academies Keilor Downs and Taylors Lakes in the Keilor Division, our attention was turned to the Western Metro Finals. Placed in a group of death with Maribyrnong Sports Academy, Strathmore Secondary and Caroline Springs Sports Academy, the boys definitely had their work cut out for them to progress into the grand final.

A perfect start to the day, beating Maribyrnong 1 – 0, set up the day perfectly for us. Following favourable results in other games, two draws against the highly fancied Caroline Springs and Strathmore saw us deservedly progress to the grand final.

There await a highly skilled Hoppers Crossing.  Losing 1 – 0, with a minute to go in the final, a free kick was awarded 30 meters out. Surafel lobbed a perfect shot into the top corner, sending the game into extra time. Following some nervy moments for both teams during extra time, it was penalties that was going to decide the outcome. Following great saves form the Hoppers Crossing keeper and our keeper Abele, we had the chance during sudden death to win the game with a Bao Thai penalty. He calmly slotted the winner, amid amazing scenes of joy and excitement.

Finally a team from our school had progressed into State Soccer finals. The last time this occurred was 2010, where our Year 8 boys won the State Championships. One hopes this talented team can emulate that great team’s feat and take away the coveted prize of State Champions.
