Secondary 7-8

SKH

SKH would like to congratulate our class leaders, Cooper and Dylan and our SRC representative, Lily.  We know they will carry out their roles with responsibility and respect. We had a great start to the year and once we got to know each other better we shared a special fish and chip lunch. We are learning about Australian Colonies which is interesting and lots of fun. We especially enjoyed writing letters home as if we were convicts, sharing them and dressing up in the Mile Room.  Rehearsals for the Spectacular are energetic and exciting, our dances are coming together nicely and the actors are learning their lines.

SRM

SRM participated in an informative incursion with Jaycob Campbell. During this incursion the students were able to learn about using oil pastels as an art medium. They used their oil pastels to great effect, by smudging a variety of colours such as brown, green, red and yellow onto brown paper to create a rustic art piece. The students produced amazing drawings of the Banksia plant, a native Australian shrub. They did this by copying a picture originally painted by Joseph Banks. The students were able to learn more about Joseph Banks and how he discovered much of Australia’s native flora. The students thoroughly enjoyed this artistic experience, and it is wonderful to see the students’ masterpieces displayed in the classroom. This incursion formed a valuable part of our Integrated Unit about ‘Australian Colonies’.

SCS

SCS has had an amazing start to 2016. Students of SCS have worked extremely hard to set goals, develop positive relationships with peers and are receiving great results in all aspects of the curriculum. Students have been set new challenges such as designing and creating pasta and marshmallow towers and computer science coding, using Hour of Code in eLearning sessions.  Students have been extremely engaged in learning about Aboriginal life when Australia was being colonised. SCS have been lucky enough to send letters to Jessica Fitzsimons who is currently working in a small remote community in NT. Students have enjoyed FaceTime-ing Jess and asking her many questions. They are eagerly awaiting their reply letters. What a great start to 2016 for SCS.

SSD

SSD have had a great start to the school year. All students have settled in well to their new classroom and classmates.   We have been working really hard to become outstanding role models and set good examples for other students in our section. We elected Josh Charbel and Sebastian Dib to be our class leaders through a class vote.

In numeracy our focus has been on counting and place value, we have used this knowledge to help us sort change and count money. We will have a chance to use these skills in the real world when we go on our excursion to Captain Cook’s cottage. We are going there as part of our integrated unit, we are learning about Captain Cook and the first fleet. It’s been a great start to the year by all students in SSD, we look forward to the rest of the year together.

SEO

SEO SUPERSTARS - It has been an action packed term 1 getting to know and build relationships with class colleagues and students in secondary 7/8.  What better way to get to know your class and make new friends than a game of cricket in Bundoora Park followed by a sizzling BBQ in the sunshine. SEO, SRM and SMP appreciated the company of playing with other classes along with staff getting to know one another. It was smiles all around for everyone not just the students! SEO look forward to getting to know more of each other and  going on more enjoyable fun excursions throughout the year.

SMP & SSB

SMP and SSB had a fantastic Thursday afternoon working collaboratively in small groups. The students had previously had a discussion about the food on the First Fleet and with grimaced faces said they would not eat while on the ships if they were convicts. We talked about food and decided that the one thing they would eat would be scones with jam and cream, this was what the rich people ate with afternoon tea. The students made delicious scones to share. Great afternoon had by all.

SMC

SMC has had a great start to the year. In numeracy we have been focusing on place value and measurement. The class has been using the discovery centre to measure different objects in unusual ways. We have been measuring the temperature of the fish tank, the PH of the water and how happy the fish are. The class is going to graph the results of these tests to see when the fish are in their element.

SCA

SCA have made a great start to the year. Students have settled into their home groups and gotten to know each other through discussions and games. They are enjoying the different activities that they chose for challenge including, bowling, indoor sports, swimming, the gym at RMIT and science. We would like to congratulate Zoe and Julian who were elected as our class leaders and they have taken on this role with great enthusiasm. Taneka has been elected to represent SCA on the Student Representative Council. Congratulations to those students. Secondary spectacular rehearsals are well under way and students are practicing like mad. We visited Cooks Cottage as part of our Integrated Unit. Students enjoyed dressing up manikins in olden day clothes and they got to put on todays clothes.
