Cooking Up A Storm

The cooking elective this term has been so much fun!  Our menu is extremely tasty and we definitely have our favourites.  This term we have made; vegemite and cheese pin wheels, chicken pizza, pork sliders, beef tacos, milkshakes and brownies.  We get to take all the recipes home and show our families how to cook!

Fun Fitness

Fun fitness is a highly physical program which is run by Chris an instructor from the Macleod YMCA. Students participate in games and activities which develop gross and fine motor skills, eye/hand coordination, fitness and good sportsmanship. This program also uses exercise bikes as well as spending some time up in the gymnasium in the foam pit. Chris constantly instils the rules of being a good sport. Chris's saying is ‘cheaters never win and winners never cheat’.  All students thoroughly enjoy this program and come out with red faces and usually quite tired. The bus trip back to school is often a lot quieter that the trip there. Can parents whose children attend please send along a water bottle for this elective!

Science Elective

We have had lots of fun in the Science elective this term. Our sessions are run in the Discovery Centre, so we have lots of space to spread out and engage in some fun experiments. We have mixed cornflour and water together to make ooblek, which is a solid and a liquid. Last week we planted some seeds in pots and hopefully we will see that they have started to grow this week. The science elective is often messy, but it is lots of fun.

Consumer Skills Elective

Each Wednesday a group of Upper Primary students are involved in the Consumer Skills Elective. This valuable program encompasses many vital skills.

Students walk to Andrew Place where they catch the public bus to Greensborough Plaza. This involves learning about pedestrian and road traffic safety. At the bus stop students gain an understanding of bus timetables. Students learn how to use their MYKI card, how to touch on and off. On the bus they practise their skills of using appropriate behaviour on public transport.

Students really enjoy the shopping experience at Coles supermarket. They purchase an item each week and learn about a variety of sections of the supermarket. At the checkout they use their speech and money skills to purchase an item. This gives the students lots of confidence in a supermarket environment.

Students eat their lunch together in the food court where they develop the social skills of eating out in public, and interacting and communicating with others in the community. All of these important skills are reinforced on a weekly basis.

This is a very worthwhile program and the students have lots of fun along the way.

Outdoor Games

This term Upper Primary students are taking part in the Electives Program.  One of the electives the students are taking part in is ‘Outdoor Games’.

So far the students have enjoyed taking part in a variety of different sports to work on their skills. Some of these sports are, Basketball, Football, Baseball and Soccer. The students have also enjoyed playing games such as, Octopus, Poison Ball, Cat and Mouse, Knockout and Gaga Ball.

Pit Gymnastics

Every Wednesday afternoon students from Upper Primary get on the school bus and drive to Pit Gymnastics for their chosen elective. Students are always very excited upon arrival, quickly taking off their socks and shoes. Their instructor Sue starts with a variety of warm up activities such as running, partner work and bouncing on the trampolines.

Each week there is a new skill taught, which include balancing, co-ordination, tumbles and jumps. They get to explore different types of equipment, from uneven bars to beams and the horse.  Students complete different circuits which allow them to incorporate new and previous skills learnt. Time always seems to go so fast as there is so much fun being had.

A highlight each week is when the students get to jump or swing from a rope into the big foam pit at the end of the session. After this socks and shoes are put back on and it’s back onto the bus to journey back to school.
