Child Safety Policy

All children have the right to feel safe and to be safe. All professionals working with children and/or their families share the responsibility of protecting children.

The Child Safety Policy underpins the school community’s attitude and practices towards child safety.

This policy is written in accordance with the Child Protection Reporting Policy and Education and Training Reform Act, Child Safe Standards, Managing the Risk of Child Abuse in Schools, Ministerial Order No. 870.

eSmart

At Concord School we want to create an environment that is free from cyber bullying, with students who know how to embrace the best that technology can offer, whilst being smart, safe and responsible online.

We currently have two staff Neschelle Castillo (Primary) and Michael Hawkins (Secondary) who are overseeing our eSmart commitment across the school.

In addition we have just confirmed a new one day per week teaching position to ensure all our Year 9,10,11 and 12 students have an intensive education around cyber safety, this will be a compulsory part of their school program.

We have included some aspects of our Mobile Phone and Internet Policy for your information and support.

Mobile Phones and Personal Portable Technology (PPT) Belonging to Students

Personal portable technology (PPT) may be used by students to occupy themselves during recess and lunch breaks. Examples of this would be listening to music on an iPod or playing a game on a DS.

PPT is not permitted to be used for internet use or social communication This means, no phone calls, no texting, no internet use, no Facebook use between 8:45am and 3pm.

Primary Section: no PPT access during school day.

Secondary Year 7/8: students may use PPT in class at discretion of teacher but not in yard at lunch or recess.

Secondary Year 9/10/11/12: Students may have their PPT in the yard for music or games only, no texting, phone calls or internet.

All Students are permitted to use their personal portable technology before and after school to keep them entertained while travelling on the school bus.

Internet Policy- Student Usage

Concord School recognises that the internet provides students with opportunities to increase their skills and gain knowledge through obtaining information and communicating with individuals, organisations and groups outside the Concord School learning environment.

Students are not to use the internet:

-Without supervision

-Without prior set task

-For non-learning related purposes

  • without supervision
  • without a prior set task
  • for non-learning related purposes

A supervising staff member must be present at all times when students access the internet.  With the possible dangers and inappropriate information available on the internet, this is a duty-of-care issue and is paramount to the safety of students.

Students must ensure they don’t give out private information about themselves or others that could compromise their safety or the safety of others.

Concord School staff believe that it is important that students learn how to use the internet safely and appropriately. Students need to learn what appropriate use of the internet is and what the consequences are for inappropriate use. Staff must ensure the consequences for inappropriate use are enforced and consistent.

Internet access is a resource to be used to support student learning outcomes.  Content accessed via the internet should relate to curriculum based activities, materials or classroom research. This could include research for projects, worksheets, web quests and other such activities including the gathering of text, pictures, audio and video (with consideration to relevant copyright requirements).

Internet access may also be used for extended educational and recreational activities or games provided the following guidelines are used:

-Sites, games and activities must have been formally approved by a teacher.

-Activities allow for specific skill development

-Activities do not become the main focus for internet use and should not be used to excess.

What is your role at the Concord School?

Teaching a Year 11 & 12 Applied Learning class

Provide us with a ‘snapshot’ into your daily routine at Concord School

On arrival I usually find our class teacher aid Jimmy already busy at work and ready to discuss the coming day.  At 9am we are greeted with jubilant enthusiasm by Aman, and with the other students quickly taking their places in the classroom.  We gather together in a circle to talk about our coming day and any news or events.  We play a team game to energise our minds and bodies.  From here on it is down to the business of our curriculum, which frequently involves trips out into the community to prepare for post school life.
