Poetry

from the Team 5/6 Classrooms

This term our students have been learning about the traits of effective writing and using these traits to develop their poetry-writing skills. They have blended their understanding of poetic devices with increasing awareness of these traits - voice, ideas, conventions, organisation, words and sentence fluency, and in doing so have created some pretty amazing work!

Following a class brainstorm of metaphors, similes, personification, alliteration  and onomatopoeia inspired by the image at the top of this page, students were challenged to write a short poem in response. These are just some of the poems they created; we are blown away by the grittiness, honesty and sensitivity shown in their words.

These poems have been written by Sarah L, Sahasra, Alen, Sarah K, Jono, Max, Amalia, Bill, Caroline, Cassia, Dwayne, Ian, Edrei and Ellia. It is with regret that we cannot publish all the work our students produce, as many other wonderful, thought-provoking poems have been written by our students - please ask your child to share their's with you.
