Halloween STEM
Dear STEMgineers,
I hope you are getting excited for Halloween! I know I am as there are many exciting activities you can do to prepare for it using your STEM skills!
Halloween Slime (Parental supervision/help)
Supplies:
- ½ Cup of Clear PVA School Glue
- ½ Cup of Water
- 1-2 tbs of Saline Solution
- ¼-1/2 tsp of baking powder (more for the white glue and less for clear glue)
- Food colouring, glitter, confetti and other fun mix-ins.
Step 1: In a bowl, mix water and glue together.
Step 2: Add Baking Soda and stir well. (We have found that white glue generally makes a looser slime while clear glue makes a thicker slime.)
Step 3: Add food colouring and glitter or confetti as desired.
Step 4: Add saline solution, starting with just one tablespoon.
Step 5: Mix well until slime forms and pulls away from the sides of the bowl.
Ghost Pumpkin Eruptions (Parental supervision/help)
Supplies:
- Ghost Pumpkin (white pumpkin) or an Orange Pumpkin
- Baking Powder
- Vinegar
- Dish Soap (optional but will provide a more dramatic visual effect of eruption
- Food Colouring and Glitter (Optional but cool)
- Containers, Measure cups, spoons, towels
Method:
Step 1: Gather you supplies.
Step 2: Carve you pumpkin (ADULTS ONLY) – If you don’t want to carve a face just remove the top.
Step 3: Pour vinegar into a separate bowl and have a scoop ready
Step 4: Add a few scoops of baking
powder
Step 5: Next Add glitter and food colouring if desired. Then add a few drops of dishwashing soap if desired.
Step 6: Finally, add vinegar and get ready to saw WOW! Repeat the process after you ran out of baking powder or vinegar.
Step 7: Clean up!
