Cricket - T20 Blast

Pedrina Park turned on what only can be described as ‘ glorious cricket weather’ as 9 year 9/10 students took to the field for the Hamilton & District schools T20 Blast.  Unfortunately the boys were suffering the effects of the fog as we took on Portland Secondary College in the first game of the morning. Batting first Portland produced a very good score of 139. This was far too good as THAC could only manage 55 in response, as wickets were lost at regular intervals. The first wicket being lost in controversial fashion as Tyler Hateley was run out without facing a ball. Max Green and Oliver Wortley providing the only real resistance with scores in the 20s;  Max attempted to make up for his dubious judgement between the wickets.

Game 2 saw THAC looking for redemption as we took on local rival Bainbridge College.  Max Green & Ollie Wortley again leading the way with the bat, with support from Euan Sutherland as we easily reached the target. Sadly running between the wickets continued to be a challenge, as Fergus Roberts sacrificed himself for the good of the team in the search for runs, when he was run out without facing a ball for a duck. Stepping up our bowling performance, we were able to restrict Bainbridge to a score in the 60s as only two of their batters reached 25. The wickets were shared with Fergus Roberts bowling well at the top, with support from Hamish Cameron & Tyler Hateley.

Game 3’s opposition was again a local derby with THAC taking on Monivae College. Needing a win to remain a chance of progressing to the 1 vs 2 playoff, THAC bowled first and were immediately on-top of Monivae. Congratulations must go to Euan Sutherland for a hattrick which stifled the Monivae middle order to bowl them out for 47. THAC made light work of the total knocking it off in a matter of overs. Needing to boost our percentage THAC batted on to finish on 170 at the conclusion of our 8 overs. Notable batting performances from Hamish Cameron, Oliver Wortley, Max Green & Tyler Hately for all retiring following reaching 25. Tyler only taking 3 balls to reach the retiring target of 25 runs and Max returning to finish on 47 not out. Looking for some confidence boosting runs, Fergus Roberts opened the batting, but failed to trouble the scorers to record a very impressive treble of ducks for the day. Thankfully his contributions with the ball made up for his off day with the willow.

Sadly our resounding performance in game 3 was in vain, as we progressed to the 3 v 4 play-off game against the only side that were able to defeat us for the day. With revenge being a dish best served warm in glorious afternoon sun, the boys took to the field after losing the toss. This times things would be different as wickets fell at regular intervals to bowl Portland Secondary College out for 80. Notable performances with the ball go to Charlie Keiller who took 3 wickets in an over, but credit goes to all the bowlers for producing a very strong display. Fletcher Bright also showing his worth in the field with a direct-hit run out to start the Portland collapse. To cap off a fine all-round performance, each of the top 3 batters retired as Magnus Howells, Max Green and Ollie Wortley all reached 25 runs. THAC went on to score 130 to finish the tournament in 3rd place.

Team: Max Green, Fergus Roberts, Ollie Wortley, Tyler Hateley, Hamish Cameron, Charlie Keiller, Fletcher Bright, Euan Sutherland, Magnus Howells

College Basketball Annual Presentation Night

6pm, Thursday 5 December 2019

Please put this important date in your diary - our inaugural College Basketball Annual Presentation Night is being held at 6pm on 5 December.  Awards will be presented in the Geoff Handbury Sports Centre, followed by a BBQ Dinner outside the MYPEC Building. We are aiming to keep the cost to: Families $20, Adults $10 and Students $5.

All players, coaches, team managers and families of all age groups are invited to attend.

This is an evening to bring together the College Basketball Community whilst celebrating the individual efforts of our basketball participants throughout 2019.

We will be presenting a peak award named in honour of the late Dr David Baring. David’s contribution to basketball at a club and association level was well recognised and now greatly missed. It is only appropriate that we establish this award and award it for the first time this year.

We are also planning on creating three new awards for Male Player of the Year, Female Player of the Year and Coach of the Year. We are currently developing the criteria and will be calling for nominations shortly.
