A sketch on art

YEAR 11

The Diploma Programme Visual Art students are having a busy Term One, gaining inspiration from current exhibitions around Melbourne. They visited the Glen Eira City Council Gallery to see works selected from students around the state in 2017 and last week visited the NGV’s Triennial exhibition for the ‘inspiration plus’ program, which has since generated rich discussion and ideas.

An exhibiting graduate (2017) from Wesley College, Dorothea Yannoulidis, visited the students recently and shared her experiences of the IB Art course. Dorothea provided words of wisdom, insight into time management and explained the process she went through to bring her folio of work together.

YEAR 7

MYP Art students have been building their understanding of the elements and principles of art. Come and see their Notan work on display in the hallway outside the 7-10 art classroom. This was an exploration of positive and negative shape. Students will explore some of this work further with an exciting multimedia creation, so watch this space.

YEAR 9

MYP Art students are working on a unit called Mapping Traces of Me. Each week we have been exploring different elements of collage including mapping shapes and lines, examining text and composition and negative and positive form. In the next two weeks students will select from these explorations to create a finished collage, which will be displayed in the Arts space.

YEAR 10

Year 10
Year 10

Art students are currently exploring the concepts of hybridisation and plurality within the framework of Contemporary Art. Each student is investigating two modern art movements, such as Pop Art and Surrealism, and blending these to develop their own personalised hybrid artistic style. They are encouraged to explore themes such as post-humanism, feminism and anatomy to construct artworks that address contemporary debates in society.

Recently, they visited the National Gallery of Victoria to see an exhibition by Del Kathryn Barton for inspiration, as she is an example of a contemporary artist who explores hybridisation and the human form.

YEAR 8

Students are currently working on a collaborative sculptural project that draws inspiration from the atomic structure of crystals and the science fiction novel by JG Ballard The Crystal World. They are exploring networked forms that can be constructed using equilateral rods and observing the effects of chance and play within natural variation that occurs in the construction of their objects. Students are also observing the geodesic designs of the engineer Buckminster Fuller, the crude plaster sculptures of Franz West and the elaborate fabric wrappings of the Down syndrome fibre artist Judith Scott. Students are in the middle of constructing their armatures and will be next adorning their forms with colourful fibres and then installing their artworks as an ‘outbreak’ of crystallisation within the School.

YEAR 12

Year 12 Art students are engaging in the exploration of personal concepts and techniques  which they will develop throughout the year to make a series of artworks. They are also studying the artworks of Edouard Manet and Ricky Swallow to appreciate how different artists from different times and places have produced artworks that reflect their cultural and personal contexts.
